Add Alabama to the list too, no liquor in the grocery stores. Even convenience stores that happen to have liquor have to keep it in a separate walled off section of the store with its own entrance. Gotta love weirdo State run rules!!

That's crazy, there's at least one bottle of Hibiki in almost every store I go in down here. Just like the Knob Creek Limited Rye, it's all over the place. I didn't know it was even remotely hard to find until I saw some Reddit posts about it. Now Weller and to a lesser extent Blanton's, are unicorns that I've only run across a few times.

Heading up to Chattanooga at some point soon, so I'm of course going to treasure hunt while there.

I had a 12 year bottle of Yamazaki that I finally finished after a couple years of sips few months back. It was a wedding gift back in '09 so it had aged rather well. I liked it a lot but it was a more expensive bottle for sure.

Availability of some stuff can vary, so it might be hard to say.

I mentioned Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky a few posts back and think that it would be a really solid recommendation for a Japanese whisky. Probably around $50-60 and should be readily available.

Nikka From The Barrel might be available near you, too. Probably closer to $75, but a higher proof whisky and really good. Hibiki Japanese Harmony has received a lot of well-deserved praise in this thread, but seems to be getting harder to find. Worth picking up if you can find a bottle for under $70.

what does your taste lean towards? and how much do you want to spend?
stick with the "real" japanese whiskies and you can't go wrong.

finding non age stated yama/hakushu is hard nowadays but still possible if you keep your eyes out. Hibiki is decently available too
Nikka makes some good stuff, but I'd recommend the coffey malt over the grain if you can find it. It's recently been discontinued.

If you can find a taketsuru or something like a miyagiko, theyre great sippers too

Thanks guys, I have a pretty great selection at the local stores and seen a few at Costco recently as well. Heard Hibiki is great, so might start there or Nikka.

Don't really know how to describe my tastes, but I really like Basil Hayden, Eagle Rare, RedBreast 12, Whistle Pig, ect.

I think so. I've used it as my profile pic on FB before, too. Love that movie. The GF thinks it's dumb so I don't get to watch it very much these days. :pout:

This is my current collection of whiskeys. Speaking for what I currently have in my collection, Auchentoshan 12 is my favorite everyday sipping Scotch, and for the price ($30), it's extremely affordable. Lagavulin 16 is my favorite special occasion sipping Scotch, although I'll be picking up a bottle of Ardbeg Corryvreckan soon which may be a good contender. Laphroaig and Ardbeg 10 are also favorites of mine.

My first venture into Irish Whiskey was Proper 12 (sitting at the back of the top shelf), and that was probably a mistake as I'm not a fan... too harsh for my tastes. I'd like to pick up a bottle of Redbreast 12, although now that I've seen Green Spot mentioned a few times, that may be my next pick.

Buffalo Trace is my current favorite bourbon and it makes an excellent Old Fashioned. I've yet to pick up a bottle of Eagle Rare, since as the name implies, it's been difficult to find.

Rittenhouse is my go to Rye with Old Overholt as a backup (although I'm currently out). I keep a bottle of Bulleit (both Bourbon and Rye) on hand for those who like it (I don't), as well as a bottle of Jack and SoCo.

Monkey Shoulder is my go to for Scotch cocktails (Bobby Burns, Rusty Nail, etc), with The Famous Grouse as a backup.

As far as Japanese whiskeys, my favorite was Hibiki 12, and I'm really bummed that Suntory discontinued it, as I don't like Hibiki Harmony nearly as much (although it's still good). Nikka Coffey Grain is pretty good for the price. I really like Yamazaki 12, but I can't bring myself to pay $120 for a bottle.

Nice stuff, I'm a big fan of the YouTube channel How To Drink and there are a lot of products he uses that I see on your shelf. I think he mentioned that Laird's "applejack" actually has a mix of other neutral grain spirits. It seems that the straight applejack 86 you have is their return to form; 100% apple brandy

Never thought someone named "Andie" could be so attractive. (I've also recently watched Groundhog Day lol).

Anyway back to Whisky, I think I'm gonna compile the ingredients to make the penicillin cocktail as a way to end my bottle of Lagavulin and start my bottle of Monkey Shoulder.

Any input on either of these? Just got these as a promo from our distributor at work. I figure I’ll try the Dickel as I’m a fan of their Rye.
