Been thinking about trying that IW Harper 15. It sits around on most shelves here it seems. Price always scared me off tho. Anything you would compare it to?

Honestly, I can't really think of anything to compare it to - its just that good IMO, incredibly smooth and unique.

The only comparison I could make is a bourbon that can't be bought anymore. It was a Knob Creek aged an extra ~2.5 years (I'll have to double check that later), supposedly they had some extra barrels that accidentally got aged longer than normal. My brother was able to get it from a specialty bourbon shop in Kentucky years back...I have the bottle sitting around somewhere, I'll try to get some pics of the bottle soon. That bottle was literally the best bourbon I've ever had, wish they'd produce more of it. 100x better than the normal Knob Creek

Regardless, I really don't think you'll regret taking a chance on the I.W. Harper 15. Their other bourbons are average IMO, but the 15 year is fantastic.

Yeah - same for me. I just can't come around on that one. I like port finished whiskies (hello Midwinter Night's Dram!), but this one having actual port wine added to the blend is just a little too much. It's at least the most flavorful Basil Haydens I've had .

Wow! That's a great score. Can't wait to hear what you think!

Speaking of hidden, inexpensive gems when it comes to bourbon, Ancient Age comes to mind.

That's worth picking up. I think I got mine for $95/each + tax, so a little over $100 after all is said and done.

Yes! Good to see that one recommended by another.

A store near me has the Ancient Ancient Age 10 Star. It is about $2 more, but the one I usually go to for that price point.

It is the same mashbill as Blanton's and, while not quite as refined, you can tell it comes from the same family.

I recently put some AAA10 Star in a separate bottle along with one of those whiskey sticks, then did a comparison of AAA10 Star, AAA10 Star with some extra oak from the stick, and a Blanton's private barrel selection. The AAA10 Star with the whiskey stick wasn't the best, but it did fare quite well against the Blanton's regardless. I'll find the pic and some of the notes I took.

I called a local bottle shop last year asking about any allocated Weller 12 and they recommended the IW 15. Buddy over there is convinced that it’s going to be the next bourbon to go the way of the Weller line and told me to stock up... Bit of a price jump between the two! I don’t plan on buying them out anytime soon, but may give it a go next time I decide to splurge on a bottle.
