I'm saving up for my trip to Scotland in the fall. I'm not going to bring any clothes back with me; my entire suitcase is going to be scotch

Hell yeah. The wife and I are planning a trip to Scotland/Norway later this year too. I can't wait! I think we'll just be in Edinburgh and book an Islay tour. You planning on anything in particular?

Nothing set in stone yet. We're celebrating our 15th 'anniversary' so I can't just drag her along on distillery tours
We're probably staying in the Inverness area because it's fairly centrally located between Aberdeen, Cairngorms, and the islands. But we're considering further South because Islay is non-negotiable on my list, and we'll possibly hit Skye as well.

That's awesome. I'm getting my wife onboard with it by going over to Norway afterward. She's got relatives over there which makes it an easier sell. Man, sounds like you'll have a full schedule out there! Now you've got me thinking about trying to work Skye into my itinerary.

For you scotch drinkers, once you open a bottle do you keep it in the box it came in or discard box? I tend to keep the boxes as i like the packaging, just curious what others do

Depends on the bottle for me. The Glenmorangie boxes are pretty nice but I've only kept the Signet one.

    Depends.

I have a bunch of the cylindrical scotch 'tubes' from when Speyburn and Bowmore came in metal. Speyburn used to be my scotch mixer of choice (at $20 it was a pretty good all-around cheap single malt) for when I felt like a Rusty Nail or a peaty Old Fashioned or Sidecar. Those tubes are all over the place; I've got some holding beans/oatmeal/pasta/rice/etc. in the pantry, some others holding nuts/bolts/washers & nails/screws, etc in the workshop, some with spent brass for when I eventually start reloading, some have got old posters rolled up in them still from when I moved out of my 'bachelor pad' and in with the GF... Pretty sure I've got poor Alicia Silverstone in a...compromising...position rolled up somewhere in a box in a box :hungry:

The cardboard ones I just toss out once the bottle's empty, but I leave the bottle in them while it's in the liquor cabinet because I like the variety they lend to the appearance (and it makes them easier to spot when I'm feeling like a specific dram).

Square or oddly-shaped boxes just get thrown away as soon as I get the bottle home, though. My tastes are varied enough that the cabinet is hurting for extra room as it is, so I can't spare the floor space that an odd-shaped box takes up

Friend of mine bought me a bottle of makers mark when my first was born to open when he turned 21. I want to return the favor and came across these today...
    Hibiki

    Or the Nikka Coffey grain

Does he prefer bourbon or scotch? I love Coffey grain, because I prefer bourbon. Hibiki is good, but tastes more like a traditional scotch.

I like Nikka Coffey Grain better, but that Japanese Harmony is really good with a great bottle to boot.

Definitely a scotch drinker. Maybe I should go that direction. He’s a fan of all whiskey though. He hasn’t gotten into too much bourbon.
