    Not enough...
So can someone enlighten me on regular vs rye situation? I asked the guy at BevMo, and he said "I've been drinking bourbon for 40 years and if you give me regular and rye, I would not taste the difference".

Depends on the distiller. Some are obviously different, others are more subtle

I bought some of this a couple of months ago. Not my favorite, but it was definitely decent for handle that can be bought for under $20.

Decent, but I actually prefer Whistle Pig or Gunpowder for a 'rocks' or 'neat' rye, or Jim Beam for a 'mixing' rye.

    Willet rye is veeeery nice.
Can't remember if I've had Whistle Pig. I guess the only way to fix that is...have some more?

From what I've read and tasted, rye bourbon is a little spicier than say a wheated bourbon. The analogy I was told is to think of it like bread, a wheat bread vs rye bread. The wheat is going to be lighter and more mellow than the rye variety.

Clearly he's not drinking very good bourbons or ryes if he can't tell the difference...

Yes. Rye tends to be spicier (and often a bit fruitier) than bourbon. Bourbon tends to be sweeter and not as sharp flavored. If you're mixing a cocktail with rye, it'll tend to be drier than one made with bourbon.

Obviously there's exceptions on both sides, but that's the general rule.

Templeton Rye is awesome stuff. I also really like Buffalo Trace. I toured the distillery awhile back. Super cool.

Hibiki is good. Have you had the chance to try Yamazaki 12 yr. Surprisingly very smooth, but very hard to come by. I usually grab two bottles when I can find it.

My buddies at the liquor store tried to steer me to the Templeton Rye. I will give it a try. I usually side with Hank Jr. and George Jones and go with JB on the rocks. Lately though, it's been Monkey Shoulders blended scotch most often. I'm also partial to John Daniels. Or Crown. Heck, just pass me what you're drinkin'

Ive never had the Yamazaki. One of the perks of my job though is I get to try all the good stuff.
