The PN was actually pretty good. Not a huge seller, so I got one that was a taster sample about 3/4 full when I got it. If I came across it at a good price, I’d consider it.

That would be like saying Jim Beam is like Basil Hayden. Same distiller...

Haha. Well, says Van Winkle on the label. Old Rip Van Winkle distillery shows 6 bourbons total, all with Van Winkle on the label. So, Pappy or not Pappy, is still Van Winkle?

I've added a few Whiskey bottles to my cabinet, now I want to add a Whisky or 2. I'm looking for recommendations on something that has minimal burn, is smokey with a little bit of peat. Figure at least 12 years old. Willing to spend up to $80 or so... what say you?

My understanding is that Highland Park 12 is a good intro to (light) smoke/peat. Can't speak to the burn - haven't had it yet.

Perhaps not my favorite but we've made and lost many memories together. Seagrams Seven & Seven, best budget whiskey for your 20's when money is tight.

I was out running errands and made a stop at BevMo. Figured I'd get a couple mini bottles of scotch to try before spending big $ on a bottle. Unfortunately their selection was limited; mostly Cutty Sark, Chivas, etc. The only scotch was the ones in the pic. None are the peated style I want to try but what the hell, excuse to drink whisky! I'll try one or two tonight...

A review for the Quinta Ruban. Maybe they should use this one for marketing!

Just a bit out of my price range.

Crown royal is my go to, the non flavored ones.

Also been enjoying a 'local' one I've recently discovered.

I wish I could find those small bottles of scotches - none of the stores in my area carry them :(

We have BevMo. I had to look up their locations recently. Only in WA CA and AZ... Total Wine is giving them a run for their money tho so check them out if you see one

I recommend going to a decent bar and trying 4 or 5. You might spend $50 but you’ll find something you like. Glenmorangie is pretty accessible if you like whiskey but don’t know whisky. In general a highland malt is going to be less smoky/peaty than an islay malt. Bunnahabhain 12 is a good starter if you want to learn to like the smokier stuff. I like the intense stuff - lots of peat smoke and iodine in mine, please. The wife bought me some raw oysters for my birthday so I cracked my bottle of Ardbeg Kelpie tonight to go with them.

If your Total Wine is like the one in Arlington, you shouldn’t be disappointed. Maybe a little poorer though.

Just got back, opening day so it was kind of a mad-house. Scored a bottle of Highland Park 12 and Glenmorangie Lasanta (the Original grew on us the more we drank it, but not a fan at first), and mini bottles of Glenlivet 12 and Macallan Double Cask.

Didn't spend much time browsing. We'll save that for when the "newness" wears off. Definitely a better selection than most other liquor stores around here.

We usually grab a nice bottle of Scotch. The wife will get at least six from the wine section (to get the discount) and I hit the beer aisles where I try and hold back. Don’t know if you go over to Carswell NAS JRB but the Class 6 there sometimes has some interesting selections.
