I keep Aberlour 12 year around as well as Bulleit. Lead slinger is another good one and TX Whiskey.

Used to go through a bottle of Jack Honey a week in college.

We tried the Macallan Double Cask last night. Much different than the Glenmorangie 10, which was much more fruity. (Yeah, two different regions - Macallan is a speyside and Glenmorangie a Highland)

The Macallan was (to me) all butterscotch and vanilla with hints of nut (if you've ever had marzipan, it's kinda like that). I wasn't able to pick up much of anything beyond that even tho' it's supposed to have light fruits. Then again, I've tried a few bourbons over the past few months, none of which I was ever able to taste butterscotch.

So far, I'm enjoying the scotches more than the bourbons. We'll see if that continues once I open the bottle of Highland Park as I haven't had any scotch with smoky peat yet. I definitely want to steer clear of the ones with iodine/band-aid smells (blech).

I sure hate being late to the party. Perusing the pages brought on a bit of a thirst. I'm at the end of a little Mac 18 to celebrate an approaching Texas cold front. I think a couple folks on this post were on the WhistlePig train, but I would highly recommend the Boss Hog. Whip me, beat me, make me write bad checks - I want some more.

I don't know who writes this shit:

    Tasting Notes
Appearance - Deep amber gold in colour
Aromas - Vanilla notes, highlighted with toasted spice, pecan and walnuts
Flavour - Big and full-flavoured, with luscious caramel, vanilla and rich spice
Finish - A smooth, elegant and balanced whisky with an extra-long, mellow finish and a touch of pepper
    Proof - 40% ABV
Serve - A fine sipping whisky

... yeah, it has a nice colour, but I don't see any toasted nuts, spices, or candy bars in it.

It just tastes good straight up.

Tonight it's a mini bottle of The Glenlivet. Supposedly there's pineapple in there somewhere -- I don't get it (unless it's the overall fruity/citrusy taste).

    For me (neat)
Nose - Fruity, maybe hints of vanilla, light alcohol
    Taste - Fruity, smooth/creamy, light vanilla, nutty/woody
Finish is short and nutty, light, doesn't give you the "Kentucky Hug" (warming down the esophagus).

I didn't use any water as I thought it may "drown" it because it was already so light.

Very light and approachable for beginners (like me) and indicative of a Speyside based on what I've read. $36/750ml may be a bit more than some are willing to spend, but this is a good whisky. Compared to the Glenmorangie 10 I think this one's a less complex but it would've (IMO) been a better single-malt to start with than the Glenmorangie, which took about half a bottle for me to get used to, or maybe it seems more approachable because I started with Glenmorangie.

Don’t worry - you’ll eventually get curious about them and you’ll try an Ardbeg or Lagavulin or Laphroaig, and you’ll instantly taste the Scottish coastline and think about the barrels aging in the open air shacks, absorbing the seaspray, expanding and contracting with the seasons, feel the history and craftsmanship in the 12 or 16 or 18 years it sat waiting to be bottled...and you very well may be hooked on one of the ultimate expressions of what a scotch whisky should be.

I'm going to do my best to avoid any that have an "iodine" smell or taste in the distiller nose/taste notes. I can probably deal with the "seaspray" but I don't think I can cope with the iodine/band-aid smell/taste. I've got my eye on a Talisker in the very near future.

I have a bottle of Highland Park 12 I plan on opening tonight for an intro to some peat/smoke.

I needed to pick up some wine for Thanksgiving so I swung by Total Wines and More. I've been there for beer and wine many times, but not for whiskey/whisky. Figured a place called wines "and more" wouldn't have much selection. I was wrong. The entire right side of this isle is whiskey while the left side, approx 10-12 bays like you see in the pic, are Scotch Whisky. Half of those are single malt. Crazy selection.

Unfortunately they are severely lacking in 50ml mini bottles. I wish thise were more prevalent so you could try before spending big $$$.

I was hoping to pick up a bottle of Angel’s Envy Rye, but it was a bit out of my price range. Even though BH bourbon has always left me a bit underwhelmed, I figured I’d give this rye a shot. I’ll report back soon!

I like to drink a lot so I stick to some nice cheap sipping bourbon. You can get a bottle of Wild Turkey 101 proof for $22 bucks and I'd say it's about as good as the $50 stuff.
