It's really damn good especially for the price. Spicy, moderate heat if it's the first drink of the day.

To me it's like brown sugar cooked oranges on top of peach cobbler with extra cinnamon and a wink of clove, with rich oak on the finish with no astringency.

I'd go for a Russell's Reserve single barrel pick if you're looking to try some good modern Turkey. A little less heat than Rare Breed, but typically more layers of flavor which make it worth the slight upcharge over Rare Breed.

I've had a few RR picks that rival bourbons double and triple its price.

Campfire didn't disappoint last night. Same blended malt dominance, fair bit of smoke, nice rich finish. I dig the stuff.

Interesting on the MWND. Perhaps your expectations of it were off? It is a rye, not a bourbon, so if you were hoping for that more delicate sweetness of a bourbon, it definitely isn't that. I really, really like the stuff. One of the better rye whiskies I've had. They obviously vary from batch to batch, but all of the three different Scene/Act combos that I have are excellent.

    To each their own, though!

This all day long. To be a bit blasphemous, I'll say that I don't particularly care for Rare Breed, though I definitely owe it another shot (no pun intended). I LOVE Russell's Reserve SB, though. Probably shouldn't be that much of a delta for me in enjoyment given their similar roots (and why I probably owe Rare Breed a revisit), but damn I dig those Russell's.

Met @Misplaced Nebraskan down in Waco (or up in Waco from his perspective ) today. Balcones is closed except for the bottle shop, which was all I was after anyways ;). No distillery exclusives today, but this Mirador was new to me. They said it has gone to distribution, just maybe hasn't made it's way to my parts (nor was it in any of the local stores we stopped in to).

At any rate, I grabbed a Mirador and a new stemmed glass to enjoy it in.

    20200606_203121-01.jpg

Very floral, packed with fruit (blood orange, dried plum, there like), and laced with a high proof punch. Grain and herbs come in after the dragon's breath subsides and the retreat of the alcohol let's you taste again. 56.2% isn't that high compared to most of the bourbons I have (being there high proof sucker that I am), but in something as delicate and light as this, it is more prevalent. @trekker , maybe you feel different, but stepping up in proof in a floral single malt feels different than upping the ABV in a rich bourbon, to me.

I think I like this stuff.

Mirador is the bottle I share with my friends that don't like Texas whiskey to get them to change their minds, and so far I'm 2 for 2! The tenth anniversary 54.8% bottle is one of my favorite Balcones offerings yet. The refill cask really allows the distillate to shine.

absolute blast meeting up today @bvbull200 ! Whiskey, distillery, BBQ, shitty old specs...

Apparently some of us pour stronger...(i added more after double checking your pic haha:p)

very light and floral on the nose. super inviting! My last balcones was the Shiner colab so hopes were low. but man... this is smooth! I can't pick out flavors other then "sweet" or "fruity", but this is floraly fruity if that makes sense. way way less burney than the proof lets on. I would've guessed 80-90 proof max! @Kanyon71 would drink this heater! I'll include a sample with the tequila! The stem glass is awesome and a welcome addition to the family.

@bvbull200 , the lingering aftertaste... I can't place it. I can taste it and it triggers something in the mind, but my mind is, for a lack of better terms, whiskied... :rofl:it's a more earthy barrel flavor. you getting that?

also... Guess Family BBQ in Waco... not bad... Chipotle Cheddar FTW! The Garlic was good too!

Any suggestions for a bottle in the 100-200 range for a gift? looking for something a little more unique. I am familiar with all the basics.

Hmm without knowing him and knowing what he drinks. You can't go wrong with a whistlepig or if you can find a store pick anything would be a nice gift. A store pick doesn't have to be over 100 or anything they are all special in their own way.
