I've had that and the Doublewood 12. Both are good. I think you get more value from the Double as it's about $25 less and it's almost as good, but the Caribbean is also a different animal so not a fair comparison. I just picked up a Doublewood 17 (at a substantial discount). Can't wait to try it.

The Caribbean is usually $84+ here. I had an opportunity through a coworker to get it for the $63.

I was gonna say, 12 yo DW is about 50 bucks near me. 63 for the 14 yo Caribbean is a great deal!

That's one of the only Scotch's I like. My neighbor has it on hand all the time, I haven't made the plunge purchasing a bottle myself but it's normally around the $70-75 mark here.

I picked up a bottle of Dalmore 12 yesterday that I’ve always wanted to try, can anyone chime in on it? Also, shoutout to @DC 17_3 for the bottle below, you’re the man, thanks again

Altough I've had the Dalmore 12, it's been so long I can only remember that I liked it and would drink it again. I really should keep notes... I remember @bvbull200 putting together some fancy program that does that...

Very cool! I have a 14 yr Light Whiskey from High West. Got super lucky to find a guy liquidating his stash and got it for a good price. This stuff uses MGP sourced distillate that is 99% corn and 1% barley malt. Honestly, it's probably the exact same stuff you have, only proofed down and bottled elsewhere.

    20200626_144011.jpg

Mine is proofed down to 46%. I'd love to feel the burn of that HazMat bottle, though! This HW stuff is good, but it the flavor is really shallow - expected, though, as most of the flavor is distilled out of it. It is kind of like how Seagrams 7 doesn't have much flavor, only the flavor that this does have is a little more of the wood sugars. Not bad, fun bottle, but I paid waaayyy more for the story than the drink.
It's light whiskey because of the distilling proof. Whiskey is distilled up to 160 proof. Neutral grain spirits are distilled to above 190 proof. The stuff in the middle is "light whiskey". I'm sure the mashbill must be one that qualifies for whiskey to fit the in as a "light whiskey" vs some other spirit.

It's proliferation came during the big vodka boom. Whiskey distillers were losing their asses to the vodka market as the clear spirits and their less intense flavors (read: no flavor) became en vogue. Distillers had a mashbill, warehouses, and a ton of barrels that they needed to utilize in order to recoup costs, but folks were shying away from all of the deliciousness that a properly aged whiskey provided. In response, they started reusing some barrels, not charring others, and stuffing them with a distillate that was brought right up to the brink of being a neutral grain spirit so as to strip out all the flavor, then calling it light whiskey. The interesting thing with them is that you get to isolate the flavor that comes from time in the barrel.

As a matter of fact I believe the High West is what you say; same source but proofed down. I read something like that when doing Google research. When I get around to cracking it open samples will definitely be shared.

I haven't had the Mars IWAI, but I've read it's middle of the road. For $30 it might be worth a try. The others are all sake and I don't have a lot of experience with it. I've had sake before, but in such quantity I can't remember much. Banzai!

    :anonymous:

If you're looking for less expensive Japanese, maybe try Suntory Toki in a highball. That's my next thing I want to try.
