1 of us is cranky & fighting sleep. The other 1 is 9 months old & infatuated with the sound of the stainless freezer ball clinking in the highball glass.

Cracked open a Dickel 15 y/o tonight. Tasty AF.

I recently polished off a bottle of Hibiki. I get zero peat from this one and I'm not a peat fan, but I do like just a hint. Hakushu is one of those, as is Yamazaki 12.

Some whiskies are good when they are just opened, some are better after they've been open for some time. The Hibiki is a bottle that, for me, is better after a week or so after it's been opened.

So I know this isn’t a fitness thread (quite the opposite actually, right?) but I’m using some recent bourbon acquisitions as motivation for my fitness plan.

Back when I was a Marine, there were many years when I was in incredible shape, had a six-pack, ran a 19:30 3-mile, etc.

Well, I haven’t seen my abs in years and carrying around all that extra weight makes it hard to be a fast runner anymore. I’d love to run a 5K and win my age group.

I started my new regimen last Saturday. I’ve so far gone from 195.5 pounds to 191. My goal is 175.

I have several bottles that are hard to find, and I’m going to use them as incentives. As I reach each goal I’ll let myself open each and try it:

    190 pounds: Weller SR
    185 pounds: Weller Antique 107
    180 pounds: Blanton’s
    175 pounds: 1792 Sweet Wheat

If I manage to get my 3 mile back below 24 minutes where it belongs, I’m going to buy myself a bottle of Weller 12. I currently run about 27:45.

If I manage to go run a 5K and win my age group, I will buy myself a bottle of Stagg Jr.

Will let you all know with tasting notes as I reach my goals.

To show support, I will also drink bourbon when you reach your milestones.

I think to show extra support, we should help him drink his bottles right?

Best bottle you're ever gonna find under $40.

Always worth 30 or less. Over 30, I try not to feed the hoarders.

$65 is an absurd price for BT. No sir.

What state is this in, and what are the clear thingies over the tops of the bottles?

I am in CA and they are anti theft devices. One of the few thing good about this state.

I figured they had to be for security but they didn’t quite look like it.

    Well the price is nice!

    So this Hirsch.

I like it. A lot. But it's...atypical. Weird, even.

Not much nose, but there *is* nose. First second of the palate is tasteless, I mean like water. But then if you wait a second this thing opens up a lot of subtle flavor. It doesn't blast you, but it's tasty.

The finish has heat, but less than you expect for a relatively young bourbon blend. This is as close as you get to 'smooth' in the bourbon world.

My immediate thought is 'perfect summer sipping whiskey'.

I intend to stock a second bottle in the near future. This one's an easy keeper for me.

Costco had a few things that piqued my interest today. Not pictured is a lot, but I took a good 10 minutes deciding between Baker's & the Knob Creek 9 year. Both are pretty hot, the Knob at 100 while the Bakers is 107. The Bakers was $15 cheaper than my local Total Wine while the Knob was equal price ($50)...but my local TW has neither in stock as of now. Ultimately I decided on Baker's, just because it's less common & less available, and also because it's a good deal cheaper than TW when they decide to stock it ($61). 1792 was the first/only bottle I've ever poured out, so regardless of what blend/price it is I just ignored it....and judging by the full shelf I'm not alone.
