    They'll probably salvage the barrels, bottle them with a name like "Fallen Rick-house", call them a rare batch and double the price!

    From what I've read very little was lost. More will probably be lost in salvage then the fall.

    I've been looking for Wellers for months, but the stores around here rarely get it and even then, only a few bottles that disappear fast. Found one at Total Wines today and snapped it up.

    Looked on line today.

    Ebay. Empty bottle?!

    I must admit that the bottle of Weller I got was not at all interesting to me. I ended up giving it away. Seemed very one dimensional. At the time I was drinking a lot of Maker's 46 though, which is quite sweet and spicy. I'll have to revisit it again when I'm out and about. Glad you didn't overpay.

    Yeah, I've never tried it but heard about mixing a few of the Wellers to get a proximity to Pappy. Probably why they are so hard to find. For the cost I paid I figured it's worth a try.

    Yup, Poor Man’s Pappy is what it’s called. But I believe it is a mix between the Weller Antique and the Weller 12. The Special Reserve is still pretty easy to find in GA, but the Antique 107 is pretty scarce. And I haven’t seen a bottle of 12 in person for at least 2 years.

    I think the Weller line is great at their suggested retail price, but probably not worth much more... And if it’s mashbill didn’t have ties to Pappy, I don’t think it would be nearly as hyped.

    Going to a friends “whiskey and steak” get together tomorrow, so I’m wondering what would be a good whiskey that’s also not too expensive to take.

    Whiskey is generally American while whisky (no "e") is Scotch. If they are enthusiasts maybe they know the distinction and it's oriented to American whiskey/bourbon. Or not. Can't go wrong either way.

    For whiskey that is good, fairly easy to find and won't break the bank try one of these;

    Four Roses small batch
    Eagle Rare 10 year old
    Corsair Triple Smoke

    To step it up (in cost and limited availability);

    Blantons
    Hibiki Harmony (obviously Japanese)

    For something completely different but awesome;

    Pikesville rye

    Maker’s 46 is almost universally acceptable for about $30. Woodford Reserve is about the same. For double that, I go to an Ardbeg 10 because I love it, or Hibiki as someone else mentioned. In between there is some good Scotch, too. A bottle of Laphroaig Quarter Cask is about $45 and will be challenging enough to impress if your friends are used to drinking Jack.

    Super late to the party, but Bowman Brothers Small Batch (NOT single barrel), is my goto for get-togethers. It is pretty in-expensive, and pretty easy to find around here.

    Gave a bottle away to someone retiring a week or two ago and they were floored at how good it was, especially for the price point.

    It doesn't have the smokiness of some of the others, but it is super easy to drink.

    Otherwise...Eagle Rare for company. They don't get my Blantons.

    Well didn’t end up going to the party, but sure appreciate all the recommendations, and now I’ve got some stuff to choose from when I need to restock for myself. :hattip:

    LOL...I feel that way about my Buffalo Trace. It may be an inexpensive bourbon, but I really like it and I put it away when company comes.

    I think the Japanese and the Canadians would challenge that definition of whisky ;).

    I kid. Generally speaking, as you said, that's spot on.

    Agree wholeheartedly with the recommendations, too. Eagle Rare is really good, very inexpensive, and the bottle looks so damn cool, it instantly adds credibility to the shelf. You can never go wrong with that!

    Oh, and it's an American whiskey with an eagle on it, so it's the perfect libation for the 4th of July. Think I'll have some today. :D
