You probably would have needed to dig two graves.

wait, they do this? applies to 4WD too? I didn't think we were ever required to have chains in this state.

I was thinking this too, first I've heard. There must be a lot of people going off the road or something for them to require chains.

I’ve gone to crystal mountain to ski several times. I’ve always understood the law to be that you can use 4 Wheel Dr. and not be chained up but you are required to have the chains on you if an official makes the call that all vehicles are to chain up. Then you will have them on hand to do so.

I don't think I've ever seen chains required on all vehicles (including all wheel drive) until today, but that was posted on the WSDOT site. I was up at White Pass earlier today and it was snowing pretty good and windy as shit. We had fun snowboarding tho.

It did say issues. I'll screenshot it next time.

Ive been on the east side all week. I'd say calling it for weather is legit. It's not bad at this exact moment, but its definitely not going to stay that way.

fuck me if we ain't getting Californianized

    Exemptions
Four-wheel/all-wheel drive vehicles are exempt from chain requirements when all wheels are in gear and are equipped with approved traction devices, provided that tire chains for at least one set of drive tires are carried in the vehicle. See WAC 204-24-050.

When I lived in Cali in 2012, "traction devices" were exempt on vehicles where the tires had the snowflake (yep, I typed it) on the side (I.E. Goodyear Duratrac Wrangler has it but not the MT/R).

I am currently rollin on studded tires (with the stupid snowflake) and they definitely are an asset on icy shitty roads.

Leaving Leavenworth in crap conditions a few years ago there was a State Patrol road stop on Hwy 2 to check if folks were prepared. It went something like:

Officer: “Do you have good tires son?”
Me: “Yes - studs on all four.”
Officer: “Do you have 4 wheel drive?”
    Me: “Yes sir”
    Officer: “Is it engaged?”
    Me: “Yes”
    Officer: “Proceed with caution, son”

He never asked me about chains, though
