I always thought the auto transmission should be allowed to do it's thing. Unless it has obvious issues like inappropriate shifts that are safety concerns or cause damage.

The manual transmission alone will not solve all problems. This 3.5 has pitiful torque below 1500rpm. I had to use low range (or burn out the clutch) to get up a gravel driveway onto the pavement pulling my 3000lb trailer. Wouldn't even spin a tire. An automatic would probably have faired better in that scenario.

I'm definitely leaning towards OV 2.0 and running 91 octane.

There are better trucks if you want short term gratification. We all buy things for different reasons. For me I HATE repairing stuff and want stuff to last a long time. I don't have a 3rd gen yet but probably will in a couple of years. I'm willing to give into having no turbo, less creature conforts (although I would like to see more), and funny shifting to have the damn thing last and hold it's value. Buy a Ram, Ford, or Chevy and it should last a 2-3 years with good performance but hold onto your wallet after that.

I don't know how people in the 3rd gen forum give these kinds of answers. If I spent 40k on a new truck I expect it to fucking drive well, I don't want to spend money regearing and OVtuning and all this bullshit. Sorry I just don't know how people throw that out as an answer. IMO, OP if you are unhappy with the truck go get a full size V8 Silverado or F150. Love my tacoma but if I was in the market right now for a new truck, I would pick those before I picked a 3rd gen tacoma.

Has anyone had to have the transmission replaced due to failure ? Do they do what they do but still not break or get hot?

i can say it because its the truth.
it doesnt do 80mph up a hill towing very well. it does occasional towing and daily driving very well. You are telling him to choose a different class of truck, so basically no truck in this class is good for him.

Honestly, I will never understand why some people will post a message(s) to simply bitch, moan, or whine (i.e., BMW) about their trucks.

What are you hoping to accomplish? Do you need someone to comfort you? To wrap their arms around you and say..."There, there, my little snookums, it's O.K...it's not your fault that the gentle salesperson held a shotgun to your head and forced you to buy that nasty Tacoma..." I would suggest to those people they pick up a new coloring book with a blankie and binky, go to your local college campus and ask to play with their therapy pets, etc.

Although I agree with this I think the issue is when Toyota sells a truck but has factory hacks/corner cutting (gearing, trans shifting, and not to mention QC issues) to try and gain MPG's but then pretends that nobody is complaining while offering no fix (re-flash temporarily clears learned trans behavior) is loathsome. The toyota apologists on here are saying things like "mines fine" "buy a MT""Buy a different truck" should just admit they get butt hurt when someone mentions the obvious issues and if this makes you butt hurt as well then look no further than -17.7% sales in September YoY. This is my 7th Toyota vehicle and 4th Tacoma so let me chime in and say that the newest crop of Taco's have the worst customer service and crappiest initial quality of any other generation.

In the end I had trouble deciding if I was going to keep my 2018 OR DCLB but there wasn't anything I was willing to risk my $ on (like a ZR2 or Ranger) so I decided to OVTune and Re-Gear which has made it more tolerable. I would like to also throw this out there, why does the 4Runner have a center arm rest and rear A/C vents when the Taco gets a shite interior?

i dont disagree but i knew what i was getting into. I bought after reading the reviews. its not in my nature to complain... i find solutions to problems thats half of what my job requires. OV tune and gearing will work. ultimatly some people can never be happy.

You like your truck? Stay off this site or you’ll be finding shit to not like about it. It’ll all be random and in your head but it’ll worm it’s way into your brain until you find yourself questioning every little sound and shake...

Finally someone besides me says it! Thank you! My truck rides smooth as a dream. I’ve said it a thousand times and invariably somebody will chime in immediately after that “They all have shifting issues”. It’s horse shit.

Whatever the issue was they addressed it with the ‘19’s. If they hadn’t I wouldn’t have bought mine because I already knew what to look for from my buddy’s ‘16 which does in fact shift weird on the highway.

Don't waste your breath on these guys that think “premium” gasoline means that it is somehow better. They have no idea it’s just designed for higher compression engines and does absolutely nothing for motors that aren’t designed to burn it.

The only effect it will have is on your wallet when you burn more money every time you top off, but the “premium” label is strong in their minds. . .

I love Tacoma's enough that when I got rid of my Ram 3500 I couldn't wait to be back in my favorite truck and even the test drive didn't seem too strange but the trans taking a few days-weeks to learn is a real bitch since a simple test drive doesn't usually expose it as a problem. The shifting issues are a real problem for some and people conversing about it could eventually encourage Toyota/Aisin to offer a real fix.

Luckily for me I had the $$$$ to re-gear and OVTune but many on here don't.

Did he go in and say "Please update my ECU". Most reports here indicate that will fail. Your buddy should find the relevant TSBs, then schedule service with complaints that match those in the TSB. If they push back, show them the TSBs. That method has been much more successful.
