then he obviously didnt test drive it before he bought it... or do any research.... he would have found these forums, and read reviews of the transmission, and decided to go manual, or look elsewhere.. his own fault for not being an informed consumer.. so have fun, get a full sized, or see what ford and chevy are shoveling.. especially when he didnt bother to even see if there was a fix (TSB's), and OV-tune/regearing.. BYE FELICIA!

It's Friday, you ain't got no manual & you ain't got shit to do!

Sounds like you have it a worthy couple of years. If you're not up for OV & gears, what else is there in midsize? Nada. Frontier may reemerge something new soon.?. Never trusted a Nissan Auto though. Other than that, nada.

You know most the people on here are Tacoma fanboys and will do everything in their power to defend the Tacoma, so making a thread saying how the Tacoma is a terrible truck is going to get some "spirited" replies.

Ranger, Colorado, canyon, gladiator... there are many other mid size choices, maybe those aren't a real choice to a Tacoma enthusiast for obvious reasons but there are other options. Many options.

Just to double check, you got 12MPG while towing at 80MPH in hilly/mountainous terrain and don't understand why you got 12MPG? As for getting better mileage with a V8:

I have a manual--can't comment on autos. It is a little quirky with towing (~3500 GW camper in my case) but it gets the job done. I sympathize with the OP that 1000 lbs for a trailer is nothing. It is unlikely with a short trailer hauling motorcycles anyone is going to get into trouble with sway.

You can't really drive with CC on in hilly areas. Gas mileage is gonna suck no matter how you slice it, but going more than 70 will really frustrate you.

I observed though that 65-70 seems to be the "sweet spot" for driving especially in 6th gear. When driving slower it seems there's less torque available to maintain speed and more downshifting is required. Seems paradoxical to me, but that was my observation the last trip we took.

I would feel fine towing up to 4000 lbs in mine anytime, but anything bigger needs a full-size truck, which for most people who complain about towing is probably what they need. I just don't like the worse gas mileage as a DD and especially trying to park the dang thing in the city and car parks at work. The other option is a diesel, and the only midsize option in the states is the Colorado, which is rather expensive and not fast at all.

Making a thread saying Tacoma is a terrible truck just begs the question "why do you still own it".

There are so many threads on TW, the options and fixes discussed ad infinitum, why the need for another thread unless you are just craving attention, imo.

Ive had ths truck since new, 3.5 years and 45000 miles....Ive really tried to like it

You call that trying? Stop pussy footing around and get your back into it- don't come back until you have 10 years and 120k under your belt, then we'll talk...lol and that's sarcasm...

Keep it, sell it- nobody cares - do what makes you happy.

If you don’t like the power/shifting now chances are nothing will really fix it completely. You could get new gears but if you don’t like the truck I would keep investing. Good part is your truck has amazing resell value so when you trade in you should do well. If you want the 4.0 and don’t need a bed a 4Runner is an option. Other then that the tundra is a great option for towing but MPG sucks. I got 12mpg but I was lifted big tires etc.

Well it is a Tacoma website so I would expect at least a couple Tacoma fans.

OP - sounds like you aren't happy. Trade it, sell it, give it away and get something else. Unless you really want a mid-size or are limited on space I'd go full-size in a second. Good luck.

I’m definitely taco biased and think the truck is amazing despite its imperfections.
There are many solutions for you. Hope you work it out.

I tow in 4th gear, tow/haul mode, "screaming" at 3,000 RPM at 65 mph with my Tundra, so I think maybe a F250?

I don't tow anywhere near 80mph like OP and have zero problems.
I never would. Totally unsafe imo.
I pull 5k easily, level ground, reasonable speed.
