Trans drain/refill attempt #3:

Cleaned out the hollow hex area of overfill plug, lightly hammered 5mm hex bit in, got as close as fucking possible (while being extremely careful from the get go) to stripping the bolt without stripping it. Fuck that hex overfill plug. Ordering a second drain plug (with normal 14mm head) to replace the overfill plug from Toyota dealership tomorrow since it's Sunday and they are closed.

 

Did the 3ish quart transmission fluid drain/refill. Swapped out the 5mm hex overfill plug for a 14mm drain plug because fook that fookin hex plug.

Out of curiosity I watched the video and looked at the product page. A few things to note.

This is how a typical compression adjuster works. Notice where it’s located, meaning on the reservoir.

The ones on flatout are at the end of the shock shaft. He mentions how beefy those shafts are, but that’s because they’re hollow. Compression adjusters work by restricting the flow of oil, and typically, there’s no oil down at the end of the shock shaft. So it’s likely their rods are hollow and their compression adjusters are some weird little flow restricter valve. Hollow shaft also means not as strong. Big shaft in a small shock body also means less room for oil which is what keeps shocks cool.


They also can’t smell dampening correctly on their product page which is a red flag to me.

At that price point I would go with bilstein 6112 because it’s proven. It’s also a much larger shock body so stronger and will provide better cooling.

 

Typos on product pages are a dead giveaway that it's a Chinese company.

It does nothing but rain here . At least 6” the last week alone . Spent yesterday morning pumping my basement and installed new sump pump . Raining again now canceled our beach trip that was supposed to start tomorrow . Rain forecast all week here and where we were going in Connecticut.

Brian, how pliable was that grippy wrap you used on your tailgate panel? Could it do some complex curves? Like a door handle?

 

Lol I saw this after replying to your PM. That stuff I used is very flexible compared to the other brand I've seen people use. I'm not sure how it would do if wrapped around a tight bend though.

 

Cool. I'll have to buy some and experiment. Trying to dig up solutions to a problem in the future.
