    :notsure:
Toyota said it, not me. But I feel like the 4GT doors look bigger in the front compared to the 3GT.

It's hard to keep track of what Toyota says. I read that and completely forgot that's what they said.

then there's the guy that rebuilt his airbagged 2nd gen with all 3rd gen exterior panels... so maybe the exterior metal doesn't count generationally?

Not really a common occurence on the millions of these trucks in circulation not to mention the plenty making it wayyyyy past the 100k mark. And looks are subjective, especially with those dumb asf fender flares, stupid front end angles, two tone roof and over done interior pieces. But sounds like you are excited to own one. Jump in the 2022 Tundra group on FB, those are a bag of problem POS, guessing the 4th gen sharing the same frame and all new as well probably will follow suit in build quality, but hoping not. I do agree this thread is stupid as well as this argument over gens.

Agree, I dont hate it, but its not light years better than the 3rd gen as some of these t**lbags are claiming that havent even owned a 3rd gen and banking on an all new redesigned truck that no one has driven yet.

Should have a good idea by mid 2024. I'd say impressions of Toyota trucks by Toyota fans are heavily based on the drivetrain. Made the 2nd-2.5 gen Tundra the reliability king. Made the 3G Tacoma kind of meh on driving performance, but it got measurably better 2020 on. But the criticisms were justified. The 3.5 was a compromise.

Reports from 3G Tundra owners 2023 on are pretty good, and I expect 4G Tacoma owners are going to be just fine.

I think a lot of the tension is because these trucks are becoming more impressive, but more complicated which not only strays from Toyota's initial mission with trucks, but leaves room for issues which leaves room for unknown reliability. Which is very Ford like. Ford makes objectively better trucks off the lot, but long term reliability and reputation is not there yet.

That's where 2G Tacoma owners kind of dunk because they have the frame, the brakes, the suspension, the underpinnings of the 3G with an objectively better drivetrain that's powering flagships like the 4runner and LC 70 to this day. They didn't put the 3.5 in these flagship vehicles for a reason. I'd bet that Toyota is going after 80-90% of Ford's paper specs while keeping the reliability heritage in tact with the 4G tacoma. But still, the 4G is a WAY different vehicle than the 2G/3G. So time will tell.

I'm not in the market, I love my 2017 and it has many smiles/miles left. Also, I will be a full-size next round. However, I'm psyched to see what this truck will be. Good looking, new engine, MT, lots-o-goodies, etc..

I assume by making such a statement that the OP has already driven the 4th gen and has thoroughly tested its durability and longevity.

Nobody’s driven a Gen4, and we don’t even know how much it will cost. So of course this whole summer it can be The Greatest Truck Ever: Turbos that go a million miles, frames that never rust, and out-crawling a Wrangler. Sure, why not. Whatever a devoted fan can imagine goes, so long as nobody actually owns one.

I personally think Gen4 is a home run in most ways, but Gen3 is also really good right now, and likely a lot cheaper, trim by trim.

Gen4 on paper isn’t compelling enough to make me call up my local Toyota dealer. At least until after the first wave of dealer markup champions lay down their deposits & back up the hype they’re already spreading oh so thick.

Dunno, my impression of this forum is that most people (at least the high noise/low signal/low useful info people) here think the 4th gen is a heaping pile of shit.

Funny how that works. I lurked here years ago before making the leap on my 3g. There were a vocal few (high noise/low signal/low useful info) with the same opinions. Seems it has grown exponentially. Meanwhile, I love my truck and humbly call it my heaping pile of shit. Can't wait for my new 4g heaping pile of shit.

There were a few things that drove me crazy with my 2017. The 2021 I have is awesome. It’ll be a while before I buy another truck.

The 4th gen looks cool. If I can watch Star Wars or something on the 14”, then that would be nice.

I’m a happy gen3 owner, I would have considered a gen4 until Toyota decided to dump the access cab. That totally killed any chance that I would buy one. If my truck needs replaced it will be another gen3. I am quite sure that thousands of people will be happy with the gen4.

One aspect of the next gen trucks that no one is talking about, but will be soon is that a lot of independent Toyota shops won’t touch some of the new drivetrain components.

A local Toyota indie shop near me no longer works on the new tundras because they don’t have dealer resources or an unlimited supply of parts to throw at increasingly complex mechanical and electrical systems while trouble shooting them.

A lot of folks dump their trucks after warranty is gone but there is a small portion of this forum that want to hold on their trucks for the long haul. It’s something to consider.

one of the factors in this is when techs that were trained on the new stuff strike out on their own. once that happens you will find independent shops willing to take newer tech.

and the same happens with older tech good luck finding a decent younger mechanic that knows how to tune a 4 barrel carb.

Luckily for that shop 99.999% of 3rd Gen tundras are still under warranty so they haven’t even seen a 3rd gen customer for anything more than an oil change.
