Around 1000 rpm and 1500 rpm on level road and just a little pedal to keep moving, my truck seems to have an intermittent miss. 65 to 70 mph also. Hard acceleration is no problem and around 3500 rpm the vvt kicks in. No warning lights. About 15k miles on the odometer. Anyone else have this.

Welcome to the 3rd gen Tacoma. You have the fuel pump recall performed yet?

yes mine does same thing 12k miles, i think its the computer "learning" driving habits, not a misfire. my fuel pump was not affected by recall. 2020 sr5. Maybe the guys who do the OVtune can chime in.

Yes I had the fuel pump replaced. Seemed to run a bit better after the work. My truck has acted this way since I got it. Had the Tranny TSB done in Aug 2018.

So what im experiencing kinda describes how these trucks typically run?

I had it. Other owners on here have had it. After getting the fuel pump replaced and now the latest tsb transmission update I havent noticed it. I havent been on a highway yet only 2 lane roads since having those 2 things done but if Im not mistaken I dont think it shifts into 6th gear until it reaches 60 mph now.

Ask for the TSB update, it addresses this, and the fuel pump helps as well.

Are you talking about the TSB-0092-20 ? I did see the list on another Thread here and the 4th to 8th position of my VIN matched one on that list.

Haven't noticed anything resembling a miss in my 2020 sr5, but did notice the engine lugging when in 6th gear going slow after a couple tanks of premium gas. It doesn't do it when i fillup with 87 grade.

With the engine design and calibrations Id say 87 octane is what it is designed for. Maybe the sensor electronics has to deal with something out of the ordinary like 93. This is my 3rd Tacoma starting with an '06. I certainly do like them. Let's face it, regardless the method, it does take a certain amount of work to move a certain amount of mass.

Manual states 87 or higher. Its not designed to run on 87. My taco drove amazing on 91E0, on stock tune. Now that im tuned to premium gas, it drives even better. I remember Ov tune stating in one of the threads that the 3.5 is happier with higher octane gas.

My ranger was designed to run on 87 only and it was clearly stated in the manual.

Not my 2020 v6. It lost power on hills, and hunted gears with 93 grade e10. Seemed after the third tank it got really noticeable, even fuel economy dropped 1mpg. I'm back to running only 87 now and the power is back plus it pulls hills without hunting. Fuel economy has steady crept back to within a tenth where i use to be.

Interesting, was the opposite experience for me in my taco. All the japanese vehicles that i had, ran better and got better fuel mileage with 91 or higher E0. Now, the domestics i had, preffered 87 with corn juice.

You are the only guy on TW that says that it runs better on 87, strange.

Just curious, in dollars per mile, what might the difference be? If I do short range travel like less than 10 miles round trip and multi shut down and starts, is a higher grade fuel better cost wise?

93 fixes this on my truck. Light load and light throttle applications where engine miss is felt. Been this way for 57k miles now.

My truck is not part of the fuel pump recall either.
Lots of others have reported this issue as well with no real fix.

Here's some more reading on the subject:

Not all of them are directly applicable, but covers the subject pretty well. There's also links in these threads for the "OcTanE is suPPoseD To bE 87" crowd relating to OV and the work he has done with the tune and stock maps.

Well you are paying a bit more, and get a but better fuel mileage. At the end of the day, its pretty much a wash. I just like the EO gas much better, my truck sits 5 days a week.
