I have a bunch of vacation time coming up over the 4th of july. I am using this time to spray lizard skin on the whole inside of my truck, and hurculiner on the underside of the cab.

But, Im wondering if any of you guys think I should spray the insides of the bed sides, and insides of the fenders (remove wheel well covers, spray insides with bedliner) I know these areas are not a huge impact area, but might be nice to keep the salt off the paint since its just primer on these areas. Pretty much I want to coat everything thats not a shiny surface that you normally look at.

Now, before everyone says fluid film! I already fluid filmed all the inbetween areas. Anywhere there are 2 sheets of metal welded together that create a open area inside have been sprayed with fluid film (rockers, tailgate, front core support internals). I sprayed the frame with fluid film, but the car wash blows the film off right away leaving it open to again.

i dunno much about hurculiner or lizard skin, but for the FF, you should just spray it and leave it.......don't wash the underside of your truck. FF seems to need to be reapplied every 6mo or so. There are other oil-based rust options for the underside like Krown.....I get that done once a year.

All the automatic car washes around here have underbody pressure washers :( In the summer I can hand wash, but in the winter time I have to use the automatics or bring the truck down to the bus shop my father in-law works at to hand wash.

Lizard skin is a thermal acoustic paint. Its like dynamat mixed with bedliner, but sprays on, has ceramic balls in it to block heat also works great for the roof because it doesnt get hot and fall down like dynamat sheets.

After I spray the lizard skin, you can come down and check it out if you want, im just down in burnsville.

You ever try Mr Car Wash at 494 / 100? Might be a bit far for you for a car wash but last time I was there I could have sworn they had an option with no underbody wash.....I know the ones in Hopkins and Golden Valley do, I've got the $22/mo unlimited basic wash thing from them.

I'll have to see this. Keep me posted!

I work at 494 and 100 actually :) in the workspace trust building on the north side of 494 and west side of 100.

I get back from vacation on the 27th, then have off from the 28th - 8th, so I will probably be starting on the 28th or 29th. I need to get another car out of storage before I start so I have something to drive while the truck is torn down. I'll let you know when ive started spraying.

Never heard of lizard skin, but if you think it works and ya got the time, go for it! The more the better.

As far as fluid film, Ive never had it wash off to any significant degree in a regular car wash. The high pressure self-serve bay is a different story though.. Also, I find a little dust and road grime seems to help the FF 'setup' or solidify over a week or two.

“Hurculiner on the underside of the cab”. Is this inside the cab or do you mean as a undercoat?

Its used alot by hotrod builders because it works really well to seal up the metal and to stop rattles and stop heat from the exhaust.

Hurculiner under the cab and lizard skin inside the cab. So the bedliner would be outside the truck and the lizard skin would be inside the truck.

I stick with “solvent undercoating” (vs rubberized undercoating). It stays soft and so doesn’t form cracks. The rap on a lot of undercoating is they crack and trap water. Yes, you can say the same thing about paint.

cracking seems to be with catalyst based bed liners like raptor liner. Hurculiner stays flexible. I sprayed my PA speakers with it and turned out really nice.

Id second this. Sorry OP, read your first post too fast and missed the part about bedliner. Everyone I know in Maine who has used something like that has eventually hated it due to cracks / pinholes / etc that let salt water in. Oil based coatings that get re-applied yearly seem to be the way to go. In my mind at least

Are the people you know who used bedliner use the spray cans or brush on? Im using a industrial bedliner spray gun, gets it nice a thick like a real spray in bed liner done at the shop.

Ive never seen a failed spray in liner before, and I would think a bedliner takes alot more abuse than the underside of my truck.

The spray can stuff sucks, I used it for many years on old BMWs. Usually I would have to re-apply it yearly to the wheel wells. Ive never used it with a real bedliner gun (aside from spraying my PA speakers) but from the feel of my PA speakers it seems pretty strong.

I used Dynamat for the inside of my cab, that Lizardskin seems like a reasonable alternative. But not a chance that i'd spray bedliner under my truck. Treat/ paint the frame with some Por-15, Eastwood, Fluid film, whatever but I wouldn't use bedliner

Do you have a reason you wouldnt use bedliner? Seems that beds take more of a beating than the underside of a truck would, so you would think its more durable. When sprayed in a bed it gets sun all day, tree sap, bird poop, standing water, ice, snow, dirt, gravel, large things hitting it, yet it holds up really well against that.

Video shows line-x, but its still a bedliner spray.

Because rust. Bedliner is designed for truck beds just like rust inhibitors like Eastwood, Por-15, and FF are designed for frames (and other steel parts that are susceptible to rust). They are designed to actually stop and prevent rust. I would worry that the bedliner would trap moisture, and cover up/ hide any future potential issues. My frame is treated and in good shape so I dont have experience with frame rot, but everything I've read on the subject says that these frames have a tendency to rot from the inside out. If you're concerned with durability of your undercarriage, maybe consider a set of skid plates? Just my .02

Fair points, rust inhibitors are great for the frame, the underside of the cab though is not a rust prone thing like the frame, its galvanized, dipped and half ass painted orange.

I wont be bedlinering the frame itself, that needs something like a rust inhibitor. I will be bedlinering anything that is currently orange (my truck is orange) as those parts are much more rust proof than the frame to begin with.
