A lot of people don't "off road" their Tacomas even if they are 4x4s. Some want the 4x4 for snow others for boat ramps. If you want "off road" protection the Off Road Tacoma has the composite skid plate that will probably suffice for most people that don't want to thrash their $45K+ truck. Toyota offers a model with an aluminum skid plate, another with a steel skid plate, and all three skid plates through their parts department. Something for everybody. Toyota knows their market and how to save/make money.

 

^^ agreed. Why would you need any protection underneath a TRD sport trim? Toyota specifically made this truck trim for on road use. And maybeeee light offroad use.
Toyota has a TRD off-road trim for the off road use with slightly beefier protective covering. And then a pro and trail hunter for max protection in their line up.

Of course I also think that if Toyota offered a "TRD Pro" without a skid plate, stock suspension (maybe collar lifts for the stance), and no hybrid (even the detuned 2.4), people would buy it because it's never going off road. The skid plate would probably have to be grey plastic (or grey felt) with red TRD letters.

 

You’re right. Maybe a few small percentage of Tacoma owners use it for offroad, another small percentage for work/farming and a large percentage of owners use the truck for groceries and commuting.

 

Not really, it's called a splash guard.

 

I agree on the dollars comment. The original felt thingy on my SR5 just feels like total BS. My truck is just under a year old and I honestly can't believe it lasted this long.

My Miller Cat just arrived this afternoon. Haven't opened it up yet and probably won't be able to get under the truck to install it until later in the week but I'll post pics asap. Thanks for all the tips and info. Love this forum!

 

If you have a jack, put the skid plate on it…..will make install easier………also, Calie Kuo (sp) , young lady that does Tacoma mods, has a you tube install video that is well done
