I took my fender fares off when I had them painted. A few screws and about 8 plastic clips per flare. I got new clips online for about $32 for all of them. I don't recall the name of the place where I ordered them from.
The truck looks a little meaner without the flares, because it looks like the wheels are wider, but I prefer them on.

IMO it wouldnt look to good if you were still stock. The only reason I took mine off was because they wouldnt fit with the 35s. I would have left them on had i stayed with 33s.

well im not far past stock. but if i took them off it would be hard to keep debris off the side of my truck. i got 17x10s on my truck now they already throw tar on the side of my truck from the roads with the flares on the truck

I guess I am on the other side of the fence. My 02 PreRunner doesn't have fender flairs & I want to find some. I couldn't find any threw bushwacker & buying them at a dealership is out of the question (crazzy priced). I have 31x9 tires on stock rims that are beating up the sides of the truck.
If anyone has any suggestions that might help me, I would love to hear them.

When I did mine, it was ~$3 for the smaller clips (red I think?) and ~$4 for the larger (blue i think?). Total was over $100

I got mine on line, not ebay though. I can't remember where.

Do you remember how many of each (blue and red) you needed for all 4 flares?

I took one of mine off once and decided that I'm never removing any of them again, lol. One or two of the clips broke and was a hassel to deal with afterwards. Found that it was not worth the risk in the end.

Took mine off and didn't look back. The holes don't bother me one bit.

Tht is what I am trying to figure out. I just scrounged through the service manual and couldn't find anything indicating different size clips used. This is the best I could find: As far as I can tell the hashed triangles represent the clips, but I can't find what that symbol represents. Because it doesn't show different symbols, it leads me to believe the clips are all the same, they just make them in two colors.

Just found this page on clip removal and it shows the hashed triangle: It also shows the other clips that are used on the truck, and none of these are represented in the flare removal link I previously posted.

I took my flares off recently to paint them and didn't put any clips in the fenders. They are being held on by the bolts only. Seems sturdy enough for me

If you buy Xenon fender flares, they are almost twice as big as stock 01-04 fender flares and A LOT bigger than stock 98-00 flares. Yet, they have no way of attaching the flare around the perimeter. SAY NO TO CLIPS!

i have a stupid question, i've been searching for an answer and cant find the info i need. I know theres a physical difference between 98-00, and 01-04 flares. 98-00 are smaller and made out of fiberglass. my question is, do the early flares(98-00) mount the same way? are there holes through the sheet metal for mounting? if anyone has a picture of the back side of the early flares it would answer all my questions. what i have going on is my 01 has flares, its getting rusty, i need a box and fenders. well im wondering if i find a non flare box , can you make a set of early flares go on? this is just a thought i've been kickin' around.

I had to get new clips for mine after I took them off to rhino line mine. I was able to get all the clips for pretty cheep at my local Fastenal store.
