The very first sport dclb that came in at my local dealer had this happening. I know on the 2nd gens there is a rubber gasket between the flare and the body, the 3rd gen just has 2 sided foam mounting tape. I can picture dirt and crud getting all in there.

You can see the foam in the first picture starting to pull away from the metal near the top (above where it already has). Was wondering if it could be caused by temperature swings, but hasn't been too drastic here so discounting that. Maybe not enough pressure put on it at assembly, or the tape was touched by something that caused it to lose some strength, like a Texan's finger touching it! :)

Stopped by the dealer on the way home and had them have a look and put a note on my account.

Service advisor talked to warranty manager, all good, they'll fix it at next service. That's not until June, so I'll keep an eye on it.

Maybe Toyota will iron out a solution for the 2026 models before the 4th gen.

Maybe there should be clips too? Tape, really?

You have no idea how ''sticky'' some of the new adhesive tapes are. If installed correctly, they are far superior to holes in the body that tend to be rust spots waiting to happen.

[My son is a chemist that makes some of these tapes, I've played with some he was working on, they are very strong IF the surfaces are prepped correctly and the tape isn't contaminated when applying.

The 2nd Gen had clips along with the adhesive that were plastic so no rust and extra set of protection from separating.

Yeah, I'll take the clips and someone else can trust stuff just all taped together. If you live in a rust zone, tape will not save you. The frame will obviously rust out before the fenders will on these trucks anyway.

No one knows what ideas I have other than me & take a look at some of the crash pics of 16s that've been posted up, that "sticky" tape popped right off. If it was as good as you want me to believe, it would have stayed stuck to the crashed fender. Adhesives and fasteners are NOT universally substitutable. They can work in conjunction with another to be better than either is individually but if only using one or the other, fasteners FTW............just another manufacturing cheap out.

The 2016 uses the same number of clips to hold the flares on as the 2015 did. They didn't switch mounting methods. They're not just held on with tape.

Maybe they forgot to tape my engine, and that's why it's so slow? :notsure:

They don't build them like they used to is the first thought that comes to mind.

Along with adhesive with the clips? What the hell are you talking abuit? My 2012 just had clips on the flares and that's it.

Auto manufacturers have been using tape only for many years. Dodge was doing it at the turn of the century and I never saw many falling off. Considering they actually use adhesives to glue supercars together nowadays, some wimpy pound of plastic doesn't cause any issues IF the surfaces are prepped correctly. Smutz, oil, silicone or some other material like those is enough to cause lack of adhesion.

I've put flares on with just tape, 13 years later, they were still on without an issue. I think people might be shocked at what is held together now with adhesives. [including some Toyota door skins]

More like dismayed. Glued hoods and taped doorskins and plastic motors all for 8x what the really good Toyota trucks used to cost. Whoopie!

-30 one morning here and +12 the next, plays havoc on tape.
The foam tape could be compressed when I pushed on the flare. The 2nd gen had a nice rubber gasket to keep crap out of the seem, and just looked more finished. My $0.02

A lot of Polaris snowmobiles are bonded together with adhesive (aluminum parts)

I owned a 2nd Gen too, so I would have to agree. Seems it was a better fit to me, and although not disappointed, seems like the earlier versions "probably" would have less issues. Not really sure, but as long as it gets fixed, it's all ok by me.
