Drilling on exterior? Where if you took them off you would have holes visible?

Yes, they actually look like rectangler cutouts to accommodate the tabs on the flares. My issue is getting someone capable of doing that and also when u start cutting or drilling into the body u now have untreated exposed metal which I would think translates into eventual rust. When I get the flares tomorrow I will examine them to see if maybe tabs can be cut off so no cuts or holes would have to be made. Maybe some good 3M auto body tape could be incorporated in the installation. They also screw into wheel wells too. If I think it's going to be too much of a pain in the ass, I'm just going to forget it and buy weather tech mudguards and call it a day.

Did you find your answer on this yet? I'm interested in adding some to my SR5.

I had the set, but decided not to do it and sent them back. I really wanted to tho, but thought too much risk and the added expense as well. I decided to just get the weather tech mudguards, which look good and are functional too. Let me know if you do it and good luck !

Bushwacker fender flares are expensive, but they mount with no drilling. Already confirmed with them that they fit 2WD and 4WD models that came from the factory with flares or no flares. TL;DR ALL 2016's...

The mounting is actually more a part of how the fender liner clips in. Against the body they use some weather stripping to keep it from rubbing.

Check Out My Build Thread :)
bushwackers are great! they supply an upper bracket that adds two extra screws to the top and it pulls them inward which makes a tight seal all the way along the edge. very good quality and look great! I would suggest spidertrax spacers to compliment the new flares as your stock wheels or any other for that matter will look sunk into the wheel well... take a look at my build thread and you can get a better idea...
