So I washing my Taco yesterday at work. Well when I washed my roof I saw 3 "pen tip" rust spots on my roof. I really ain't conserned as of now but I'll start freaking out if it spreads.

I do have an extended warrt. will it cover my rust?

I would go ask the dealer about it...should be covered under the 5 year rust warranty.

On a body panel?? I doubt it'll get covered under the rust warranty- Cause if they are "pen tip sized" that probably means something hit the truck there.

Can't hurt to ask- but I doubt you'll get any sort of coverage for it. They will probably be able to sell you some touch up paint. Clean the rust best you can and seal it up.

it's important to touch-up paint chips so that they don't rust

I'm having a similar issue with my 03 first Gen... I picked her up last may in NC and brought her back to Buffalo. I waxed her a few times last summer and once before snow flew and the other day after going through a car wash I noticed a boat load of pin dot rust spots surfacing... my truck is white so it jumps out at you. Does anyone think after her next wash I could clay bar and wax her and call it good or should I use something else to rid the rust and seal with something like clear polish?

Sorry this got long winded but any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks Scott

Or just use a good cleaner wax.

I use the Meguiar's clay bar kit and Meguiar’s cleaning wax... so you think by just using the same product it will take care of the rust spots and the wax will seal it enough?

    Thanks Scott

That isn't uncommon on light colored vehicles that get used in winter conditions. A good clay baring followed by a coat of wax or two will fix it right up. Most times it isn't the metal of the truck itself rusting, but small particles and other junk that get embedded in your paint. We get them all the time on our CRV, on the plastic panted trim.

turtle wax makes an awesome scratch repair kit and it comes with a clear coat pen. So all you need is that and a bottle of touch up paint from the dealer and it will take care of the.

I keep seeing multiple postings about the Toyota 5 year rust warranty and I think allot of people has the wrong idea.

The Toyota 5 year rust warranty only covers perforation rust on the sheet metal body. Anyone know what perforation means? That's right - a hole. Basically if your body panel rusts enough in 5 years to cause a hole, Toyota will FIX it.

Surface rust is normally not covered under the rust warranty except in special cases of a rusting chrome bumper within a short time after purchase etc. Anything additional will have to be passed by a Regional Rep or similar.

Got the same thing with my truck. Seems to come off with a bit of bug and tar remover and a lot of scrubbing.

As stated earlier, most of you don't have rusty trucks, just rusty crap stuck to the truck. Hand wash, claybar or scratch remover, cleaner wax with a buffer and you will be good as new. Most dealers will tell you to go shit in a hat since it is environmental but you might get a nice one that will do what I described above for you at no cost.

For those of you with the small rust specs it is referred to as rail dust in the automotive world and refers to contaminants that embed themselves into your paint and begin to rust.

A clay bar and a good coat of wax will solve the problem.
