Although this virus is new and a lot remains to be understood, influenza can be , and is most probably, more dangerous for the young and healthy. There are so many families of virus which are equally if not more dangerous in their own ways. The only difference is they are either more understood or we have built up “herd immunity” for some. If I was forced to chose between this new SARS-cov-2 (covid19) or influenza H1N1 i would elect to have the covid 19 without a doubt. In fact I would wager OP and his family who are struggling right now to overcome this illnesses dont have covid19.

    anyways

I keep checking this thread and hoping to see progress which I’m sure will come soon for you and your family! I’m sure recovery is on the horizon...God speed!

Many of us locally have talked about this and believe the virus was already here in December. My wife had whatever it was and it was awful.

OP, best wishes on a speedy recovery for your fiancée.

But it wasn’t. They have tracked it back to the first person with it in China. They didn’t get it there until December 31st.

Whatever we had was the seasonal flu. It was pretty rough though.

Not to stray too far from the OP's thread, but the first case was traced back to November 17: https://www.livescience.com/first-case-coronavirus-found.html
December 31 was when China first reported that there were several cases: https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2001191

That being said, I think it's unlikely there were any cases in the US prior to 12/31, known or otherwise. I do think there are potentially far more infected individuals than is known. Once New York state really ramped up the testing, the cases there grew dramatically. Epidemiologically, assigning real numbers to COVID-19 is going to be a challenge since a large portion of those infected will never seek treatment and therefore never be known cases.

Either way, I'm glad to hear the positive update from the OP. Considering all other testing was negative, I would be surprised if this wasn't COVID-19. I'm happy to hear your family is improving.

    Just some stuff...
Exactly! So many places with artificially low numbers due to the lack of testing. Gives a false sense of security to people living in the area.

The very first infected person that died equals 100% death rate. 1 in 100 people that passes away equals 1% death rate. Be patient and you’ll see the numbers drop.

I agree with both statements. False sense of security in that you have the ability to transmit to vulnerable individuals without knowing you even have it. But at the same time, I think the numbers supporting a 1-2% death rate are falsely inflated due to so many asymptomatic, mildly symptomatic, or untested cases being unreported.

Although it is inconvenient, I think community-wide isolation is important to protect vulnerable individuals until there is an effective treatment and/or vaccine or the case rate drops to lower levels. Remember, this is a totally new virus. Humans have zero accumulated immunity to it. EDIT: compared to the 2009 H1N1 where one of the most vulnerable groups (60+ year olds) likely had some immunity from the 1960's outbreak.

    TW,

First let me start by saying ...

    My daughter’s fever broke yesterday.

It seems as if the bad is behind us and we are now on the ending days of the sickness.

I’d also like to address a few things. We are on day 9 since my fiancée started coughing
    ( Saturday )
However since the ER ( Tuesday) it’s day 6 of quarantine. The COVID19 test was administered Tuesday. We are still waiting for results. We’ve been told to call the CDC for further updates. We live in Orange County , California.

Supplies are good at the moment. We are taking it a day at a time. Attitudes and energy are high.
Thank you for all the support , messages, and prayers.

Here’s a photo of my two girls and myself. I find sometimes, putting a picture to the story brings us all a little closer.

Will update when I can with results.

Stay Safe and Take Care Of Yourselves.
