I usually let it stop, wait a few seconds, then go to a price that I can recognize on my billing statement. Like $xx.00, $xx.25, $30.30, etc.

If you want to keep an accurate account of your MPG you should pump till it stops automatically. Also, you should never allow it to go below half a tank so that you don't dry out the float sensor inside the tank. Yes, it will happen for those who live in hotter climates during the summer.

That's 100 % correct. You can try to top it off, but if your gas station has a vapor recovery system (All california stations do) at some point you are just paying to put gas back into the gas station's tanks. Plus, if you are using a credit card, why bother rounding to the nearest dollar?

In conclusion, save some money and stop filling when it pops.

On the Dakota I had if you turn the nozzle to "aim" down the hole it went in easier, but you should finish off on the slow notch so it fills up a bit more.
Not supposed to top off btw, nozzle nazis will take you to the gulag. I'm lobbying to allow topping off the last 25 cents to round off though j/k

Is that why my gauge goes up above F when I fill up? I run it til it stops and then go to the next whole dollar. I bought it used though and don't know how the previous owner filled it up.

The gauge on the Honda I drove before wasn't right either. My Mom drove it for 14 years and I know she normally pumped a little bit more after the pump cut off.

First month of ownership... This month I'm removing front air dam, and also Rhino lining the bed.
OK, here in Oregon it is illegal to pump your own gas. Yeah, that's correct.. they really won't let you even touch the pump. So, it seems to be the practice of the fuel transfer engineer (a.k.a: the minimum wage worker who pumps your gas) always tops off your tank to the nearest dollar. Must be some state law also???

Anyway, I don't like it, nor do I recommend that to anyone.

When I am outside the state of Oregon I always stop at the pop.

    Strange huh? Who knew?

I'm from Oregon,at work I fill my own rigs luckilyand just leave on the low notch. Where I fill up on my rig, the rocket janitors won't top off, unless its that close to a whole dollar.

    .....p.s. Vancouver isn't Oregon:laugh: can't help it sorry

    Yes.

    http://www.epa.gov/donttopoff/

Also, the reason gas nozzles are required to have a hold open latch isn't for the convenience (although an added benifit), it is so you don't have to stand next to the nozzle thereby reducing your exposure to benzine and mtbe.

Alright, here's a few things for you gas experts to debate:

    - I fill up only in the mornings. When the gas is warm in the afternoon or evenings, you're not getting exactly a gallon because the gas is less dense.
    - When I fill up I use the lowest setting. This minimizes the vapors coming out.
    - I also don't fill up when the fuel truck is there; it stirs up the dirt.

    Discuss.

    - The tanks are underground and 10 - 15k gallons each on average. The temperatures are very constant throughout the day.

    - The speed at which the gasoline comes out is regulated. It cannot exceed 10 gpm (gallons per minute). Pumping slowly is actually discouraged because it may not allow the vapor recovery system to operate properly.

    - All tanks have submerged fill pipes thereby minimizing mixing. Additionally all dispensers have filters on them, so feel free to fill whenever you wish.

    Any other gasoline station questions?

although gas has a low vapor point, its not warm enough here to worry about it, and when it does hit 95 degrees the 75 degree morning has plenty of vapors.

I agree cold gas is more dense but you wont get enough to add up in a decade filling at 50 instead of 80 degrees

enough things to worry about , them is minor.

they use filters, on stirring the dirt, and I never see the truck enough to worry.See it all the time at work and never had a problem with sediment.
