Film Protection Removal

Hello, I recently purchased my Tacoma and knew that I would have to take care of removing the ugly/worn out film protection near the rear tires. I used a heat gun and plastic scraper to remove as much of the top layer as I could. I then used automotive tar remover and automotive goo-gone, both have helped a little.

I am struggling with removing what appears to remaining glue residue. My fingernails are killing me from trying to scrap the final layer of glue. I want to avoid using the heat gun too much as well as the chemicals.

I would appreciate any help from other members who had to deal with this, (if any).

Ok, I should have searched a bit more before posting. I will try the Turtle Wax product used by others and hope it works. My truck is a 2013 and from the looks of it the film took a beating.

 

WD40 works well on some adhesives. Just let it soak in for a bit.

 

Thanks. I gave up trying to find the Turtle Wax product for a descent delivery window and only two locations had it. One never responded and the other had a delivery of end of Feb.

I decided to buy a bottle of mineral spirits and will continue tomorrow.

 

Just be careful. If left on too long or not cleaned off well after done it can go through paint.

 

I read a lot have good luck with this. Wash thoroughly once finish

These are very effective. If you go non-3m DO NOT use the flapper style.
Lots of YouTube videos about the 3m wheels.

 

I don't know if this would work, but nail polish remover seems to remove glue quickly

 

Thanks. I used a heat gun, Goo-Gone, mineral spirts, tar remover and the 3m product, all with a plastic scraper. I also tried as a final step my rotary buffer with some compound. 98% of is off, but you can still see small sections of glue, but I give up as I am surprised I didn't remove the clear coat and paint with everything I threw at this.

I also want to remove the two smaller pieces of clear film in the lower back door section since they have a build up of dirt in the edges. I tried a toothpick, qtip and gave up with this as well since each time i tried to get the dirt out, the film started to crack away. It's so brittle.
