Think I found a winner. Lisle tool corp. makes many cap wrenches. Sold at places like Summit/Northern Tool/Amazon etc. Their #61560 is listed for filters from 74-76 MM. The Wix/Napa Gold is listed as 2.921 inches which equates to 74.1934 millimeters. That should work just fine. Last truck I had for 13 years and did every oil change the truck ever saw (under my ownership) myself. This cap wrench costs $5.00-$6.00. It is the method I prefer so it will be worth it to invest that much for the long haul. Just posted the part number in case anyone else seeks out this info in the future. No fears guys, I wont over tighten them.

    Not on the 2.7
There's a shield around the filter so you can't get a grip on it much above the hex (even with the longer 4.0 filter), and it's tight in there between the block, exhaust, and frame.

I can get the pliers ON the filter, but there no room to move it enough to turn it... it only moves far enough to squeeze the can a bit.

The 3-jaw Craftsman above goes overcenter and can be used for installation.

    Never ever ever.... LOL

It's a nice tool. Works much better on the 2.7 than my strap wrenches.

I like cap wrenches, except they get flooded and can be a bitch to remove from the filter. With the Craftsman, just a pop to get the filter to move, then I go by hand (if I can't get it loose by hand initially).

I cant speak for the 2.7 but the 4.0 is pretty tight as well, if other filter cap tools don't work. There is a shield but I just locked the pliers on the top half of the filter. You only need the pliers to break the seal, which is really-really short distance. Unscrew the remainder with your hand. I bought and returned 4 different types of oil filter wrenches and finally I stubbornly and unwillingly took the sales associate's advise and bought the pliers. Bingo- It worked! I hope it helps and good luck!

4.0 has a LOT more room than the 2.7, even with the cosmetic cover on.
With the cover off, you could use anything on the 4.0.

I can imagine the 2.7 is pretty difficult since its on the side of the engine. I'm not sure how familiar you are with the 4.0 but the cover isn't the only thing in the way.
I had an off size filter that was put on at the oil shop and nothing but the pliers worked... just my experience with the 4.0
