Just carry chains and a shovel if snow is an issue. And/or maxtrax. But I doubt you'd ever need them, as I'm assuming you'll never get that far off the beaten path. Being high-centered in snow is more of a concern than not having a rear locker anyway.

This has been beaten to death, so it is a good discussion. I have the DCSB Sport in MT and seriously enjoy this truck every day. I have done some off-roading and was very impressed with stock and stock tires.. I persoanlly do not find the ride harsh or stiff at all, but never drove the OR. My wife's outback has "mushy" ride and hate it because you cannot feel the road at all. Overall, knowing what IO know now, the OR is better bang for your buck when priced the same; Locker, brake booster, A-TRAC for the MT. Personally, on the AT all that gimmick stuff does not appeal to me.

I wish Toyota gave mechanical add-on options like the American brands. Would make this much easier! However unless you custom order a new chevy or gmc, most dealers I'm assuming just get the basic LT or whatever version on their lots and people just buy whats there. If you look around on the mfg sites, the lockers can be added a la carte to even low basic trims. Wish Toyota did that!

    Still want a Taco, though.

Its classic marketing I think. Lets be honest. If you really want to get into off roading, you would buy some beater jeep or fj or something. If you wanted to make a sick off road machine, you'd be going aftermarket anyways. I just don't see myself ever putting a shiny new truck i'm still paying for in sketchy off road conditions. Thats why i'm even considering the sport... as I think it looks the best.

All tacoma's are very capable. I've offroaded more with my sport than my OR. I don't even know why just worked out that way. I wheel in the snow and never needed the locker. I also have a manual so I have a bit more control. Either way the sport won't putter out in an inch of mud. Just remember tires make ALL the difference. I think people forget you can upgrade to MT regardless of model.

the price difference on those models are so close they may as well be the same. In my case my OR model was cheaper than any sport model they had on the lot.

lets break it down like this.

I'll sell you a 6 inch subway sandwich for $4.99
I will also sell you a foot long subway sandwich for $4.99

    which would you buy?

the off road model has those extra features. The locking diff, crawl control, the shocks, skid plates for basically if not cheaper (in my case) than any sport model they had.
why not get the extra's for the same money?

Yeah but the sport gets cosmetic upgrades the OR doesn't have... so that isn't the best analogy. Maybe saying they are both foot longs, but one has mostly lettuce and tomato(Sport), the other has double meat (OR)?But I get your point that the OR is the better value if you added the price of everything up. I already know this.

The off road just looks like poo compared to the sport IMO. Maybe the looks just weigh in over the locker and crawl control to me.

Saying you like the looks better on the sport (or whatever your reasoning) is OK. You really don't need us to rationalize your decision, do you? Some of us won't agree, but we don't need to. I really mean this.

4 whole pages and he had already chosen sport. You keep stating you love the looks of the sport and don't need the off road. Your decisions been made, just do it

I think other factors can be added to make it more confusing, i think certain colors look better in Sport and other better in OR
And then if you have a MT you loose a gizmo on the OR so may as well buy a Sport?

It has led me to look at the PRO since you kinda get better versions of both, without giving up much besides some extra cash
Sounds like a derail post now sorry

I get that and how it seems. But it seems the minute you want a sport it’s treated as a bad decision and I think that’s why. As if wanting to love how your vehicle looks is a bad thing. I’d love having a locker but admittedly only because it’s cool, not cuz I’d use it. Most other trucks out there have a locker standard only on their off road specific trucks( power wagon, rebel, raptor, pro4x) so to me it’s more of an off road specific add-on and nice-to-have. If it was worthless to have a 4x4 without a locker, then I’d be more adiment about getting the off road I think.

Dude there’s whole other threads of the same back and forth it’s bananas.

Yeah but what if you are on a dune made of sugar? Does the atrac still function? Would the locker or the scoop function better in this scenario

I personally don't care what people spend their money on. I have a pro, people with OR's and sr5s tend to hate on them, doesn't bother me one bit. If the sport is what you like, i support you 100%. Don't let the interwebz sway you. You're joining the taco club either way. Buy, drive, enjoy. Post some pics after you purchase

Seems to me that the majority of responses from the guys here did best to answer all your questions and then told you to test drive and buy what fits your needs.
