    Yoo!
My name's Billy and I live down in Carlsbad, California.
I've been on the hunt for a Toyota for almost a year now. At first I reallyy wanted a 100 series Cruiser, but eventually decided a Tacoma with a camper would be my ideal setup.
My patience finally paid off when, less than ten miles down the road, my beautiful '09 TRD Off Road 4x4 popped up. After talking with the original owner I found out he also had a FlipPac he was willing to sell. I was beyond stoked on the whole deal - I had read and looked at a lot of photos of FlipPacs, but never thought I would actually have the chance to buy one locally. I had to jump on it!
So here I finally am, been picturing this day for almost a year, my first TW post. Haha!

If anyone has any tips, suggestions, advice, anything, I'd love to hear!

Looking forward to learning a lot and spending a lot!

    Thanks dudes!
    See ya 'round

Hey Billy! Nice score. Welcome, I'm down in Ocean Beach, but head up to Carlsbad/Oceanside fairly often. Hope to see you around, It's desert season, and borrego is amazing this time of year.

How’d you mount the racks up there? Any issues?

The guy I bought it from mounted them. I'd have to look again but I'm pretty sure it was just some thru bolts and a 1/4" aluminium plate.
If you're asking about clearance, he measured it out so that the one comes down about 1/2" away from the cab.
No issues at all, they're solid and out of the way. I also haven't seen any sign of water getting in.

Gotcha. Do you have your surfbord up there? Read everywhere not to put weight on the shell but I need to transport my boards around.

Hmmm. Are you talking about a FlipPac specifically, or shells in general? When I was looking around for shells it seemed about half the things I read said to not put any weight, and the other half said go for it. I don't know, but as you drive around you see a ton of people with racks on their shells.
As far as the FlipPac specifically, it is interesting because the fiberglass is very thin right there with no real supports. But that is where the bed is, and it sleeps two people no problem. The guy I bought it from said he had "boards, SUPs, and kayaks up there going 80 down the freeway" - for whatever that's worth. I definitely don't see any problem carrying a couple surfboards around though.

That is a nice looking rig, congratulations on a great find. And I bet you can't wait to make it your own with some more mods!

My advice, just think ahead on the big mods. Suspension, electrical systems, armor... upgrade it right the first time for the long haul :)

    Thanks man!
That's definitely what I'm trying to do. Easy to just jump onto something but I'm definitely taking the time to search and read, search and read, search and read, on some of the bigger stuff. It also just comes down to spending time using the rig to figure out what I personally need.
    Cheers!
