    Too few to list.
My average is about 300 on a 50/50 split driving. Usually around 17mpg but the 20mpg is about 80% hwy for me. I got to use an automatic this weekend and at 2K rpms it was running at 67mph, the 6spd however, at 2K rpms runs at 55mph.

I have heard this argument before.

What proof do you have that a pump is going to overheat drawing from the bottom of the tank? Fuel flowing though the device should act to draw heat away from the unit, only would over heat if it were to run dry of any fuel and continue to suck air with a much lower cooling capacity than a fluid.

Or are you arguing that it has to wear out because it's a mechanical device that has to work to pull the weight of the fuel from the bottom of the tank?

Very nice, over 400 miles per tank. Isn't this more that the manufacturing sticker stated when my truck was new? Was listed at 16 - 19 4.0 double cab 6ft bed auto non TRD.
    Take care

I agree. I have a 2010 DC 6sp. and I just filled up today and registered only 244 miles (my lowest ever) on a tank- came out to 14 MPG!! No towing or 4x4 used during that time either, and I don't drive it hard- shift before 3k 99% of the time.

My last tank in US gallons was 21.3mpg. But I drive easier than my Grandma!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am running 0W30 Mobil 1, AFE Pro Dry air filter, no secondary air filter, nitrogen filled tires, 4.0l auto. I drive for fuel mileage. I have gotten as high as 29.2 mpg in imperial gallons. I have only gotten over 29 three times and it was in the summer. I just typed it into a conversion table and it works out to 24.1 mpg in American gallons. This is driving 50 miles an hour on back roads. No highway, no city.

I have a 2007 TRD Sport and have been getting 18.5mpg...was hoping to get close to 20mpg but maybe I'll approach that in the summer.

Both. Allowing it to get down low enough to bring the light on makes the pump work that much harder. With gas sloshing around in the tank, I would be willing to bet there are times the pump doesn't get what it's calling for.

Throw it to the mythbusters cause this is an argument I'm sick of hearing.

Every single truck I have owned in the past 16-17 years(4 total, all Ford Rangers until this next truck which will be an 07 Tacoma) have been driven till the fuel light comes on.

Current truck, I don't fill up until I hit 240-250 miles of city driving and it routinely sucks up 17 gallons of fuel at the pump. Tank is rated at being 19.5 gallons though I believe it's slightly smaller than that.

Year to date number of pumps I have replaced? Zero. All 4 trucks have made it to the 110-120k mile mark.

And before the, "It sucks the crud off the bottom of a nearly empty tank" argument. I have yanked the fuel filters off of my trucks in the past to grind off the edge of the filter and inspect the filter element. Other than very slight discoloring that is likely oxidized pieces of the few metal components in the fuel line, there was ZERO gunk or debris on the filter.

I think what he is saying is that if he ran the tank dry.
21 gallons at 21MPG is 441 miles. Not a wise move but possible if you drive with a can of gas in the back.

HOW CAN THERE BE SO MUCH VARIATION HERE? I've driven nothing but highway at 65-60 miles per hours and can only get 300 miles per tank?

what cause the 100 mile variation?

I have a 2009 AC manual with 10 on it...should my MPG's get better over time?

I am with you, I am not quite sure how it happens. I am not ready to call BS, because I do not know all the circumstances, and frankly if you go the right speed, at just the right acceleration, I guess it is possible, but I am not sure how someone does it across a whole tank of gas. Sounds like a boring way to commute if you ask me. :burnrubber:

Anyone bother finding gas stations that don't add ethanol to the gas? That shit kills your mileage. I'd be willing to bet that ethanol free + not winter gas + warmer temps, I could get 400 to a tank on a road trip through somewhere like TX or OK. As long as there wasn't a head wind.

There is no Myth Busters required here. It is the same concept as aircraft fuel pumps. They are submerged in fuel for two main reasons. The pump is going to get hot from constant use. It is submerged to help cool the pump, while at the same time it is going to transfer some of the heat into the fuel to warm the fuel which makes the atomization process easier. I agree that running the tank down to empty and filling up soon after will not affect the pump in any major way. However, if the pump is run on a constant state of empty, you had better believe that the pump WILL overheat and die.

Wow....I'm a little slow. I didn't get what you meant even after reading the thread title AND looking at the picture. I was thinking...you broke 400K miles on your truck but then the picture showed 400 miles. After reading a few posts and then realized you meant you finally reached 400 miles with a tank of gas.

I drive a locally and I start my truck up around 10 minutes before I leave for work every morning and before I leave from work (if I can see my truck). I get around 230 miles per tank for the winter. However, I just drove from Pennsylvania back to Boston and was able to make with one tank and more. The total trip was 315 miles. I think my truck is currently on the empty light and I've driven about 6 miles so far. It wouldn't die if I need another 5 miles to make it to the gas station, right?

VERY NICELY DONE!!!! I would not call BS at all, it is very possible to get 400 MPT (miles per tank) I just got 350 on a tank driving for atlanta to the smokie mountains and back. while up on the smokies i was using alot of engine breaking (2nd and 3rd gears) for extend periods of time, 7% grades for 20 miles or so. I believe i would have gotten 400 or very close to it if i had used the breaks instead of engine breaking, but then i woudl have no breaks left. I drive an 09 TRD OR auto 4x4
