    Yes^^
In case anyone is interested, here is a good moving diagram of the actual Atkinson Cycle.

    https://youtu.be/gmwpljA8sqQ

In the video, the shorter stroke is intake stroke, longer one is power stroke. Less air/fuel to compress means less energy is lost in the compression stroke. In Toyota's emulated design, since the piston rod can't be shortened and lengthened, the intake valve is left open during part of the compression stroke, simulating the shorter intake stroke of the Atkinson Cycle by having less air/fuel to compress in the compression stroke and saving inertial energy. It makes less power when running in this mode, but at cruise you're hardly using any power anyways. It switches back to regular old Otto cycle when you give it more go pedal.

This is great. Thank you so much. It's good to get to know my truck better, and this totally helped.

Regarding the V8 Tundra engine talk - I just really don't think that this is what Toyota is going for with the Tacoma. If it wanted to add that option - in any way (no Tacoma has ever had a v8) - they surely would have done it with the pro. The Tacoma is a v6 midsized truck. I don't ever think they will ever mess with that model. It just seems futile to buy a Tacoma and complain about a V6. But it's a free country, have at it.

Edit: Obviously, there's a 4 banger as well.

The "staff" writer of that article doesn't know what he's talking about. Yes buy a new Raptor if you want power. Buy a Colorado Duramax if you want efficiency. I have a '17 TRD OR M/T on order and I'm no fan boy of Colorado, but even their 3.6 is rated better for fuel economy than this Tacoma "Atkinson." And the new 2017 engine with 308 hp and 275 lb ft w/ 8 speed transmission will likely get just as good economy.

Hmmm I guess the 4 videos I posted about the Atkinson and 3 of which that were directly related to the Toyota Tacoma were of no use

...^^^... Ditto ... when mine is in humid & hot weather ... I go from 87 to 92 octane and this seems to help.

I actually opened a thread on this within the last year.

As much as I love turbos I agree.
For a car I love them for a truck no thanks. Especially not for something I'll be taking out overlanding.

I've only had turbo cars and ya they are terrible to repair when something goes. 2 years ago my turbo went in my jetta TDI, cost almost 5K to repair everything. It failed violently.
But like you said in any sort of utility type app, just not a great thing to have.

I have 25k on my 16 now, and i cant freaking stand the lag off the line. Its relatively gutless on initial throttle input. Any idea if there will ever be a hand held tuner to adjust that? If not for this single issue id love everything about this truck, but due to tjis issue im considering trading it in. I also average about 18.5 combined driving city/highway.

It all boils down to the initial throttle input and how the engine management system has it seriously handicapped until you are rolling. I get that makes good sense for off-roading and from a safety standpoint but when you are battling stop-and-go traffic it's a terrible hindrance. And considering that I'm averaging a little over 18 MPG the penalty for changing to a full size truck with a V8 is negligible. Then you have the added bonus of the extra room and extra performance as well.

Yeah, I'm sticking with the V8. Even the little 4.7 pulls nice in a 4500lb vehicle.
