    Hello guys,

Was at a tire shop this morning to get my five SCS Stealth 6 and Wildpeaks installed, 17x8.5 rim, 265/70R17 tire. But Mavis tire guy couldn't get the tire on the rim, said if he tried any harder the tire would rip. As I'm watching, I said can you try with the rim face up, guy said yeah but with his machines the wheels could get scratrched up and damaged. So I took my wheels and tires and left. Did you guys with SCS wheels or 17x8.5 have issues with the install? Is the tire supposed to be mounted with the wheel face up or down? Thanks in advance.

I’d take it to a different shop. Should be no issues with mounting them on unless they’re the wrong size tire. I’ve had three different sets of SCS wheels and had multiple tires with no issues. They usually mount it face up. Maybe they don’t have the wheel protector on their mounting machine so he tried to mount it from the back so it doesn’t scratch the face.

Sounds like a typical idiot tire tech.

I have those exact wheels never had a problem with any tire being mounted though I've not had Wildpeaks personally I have seen them mounted on SCS wheels.

My guess is the guy wasn't flexing the bead into the drop center and thus couldn't get it to walk on, that or he was using the wrong dugheads on the machine.

Take it to a different shop, preferably one that does Road-Force balancing.

RUN from that tire shop and find a decent one.

Personally, I wouldn't want that wide of a wheel for that size tire but it shouldn't be a problem to mount them and all sorts of shops regularly mount tires that are much, much more stretched than yours will be. Falken recommends a wheel width of 7.0-9.0" so you're not out of the "normal" range. Any reputable shop should EASILY be able to mount those for you.

Yeah, I'm going to try some other shops that offer road force balancing, see if they can mount the tires with the wheels face up without damaging it. Thanks for the replies guys.

    Same crap everyone else got
I have methods that are 17x8.5 and had the exact tire and size you ha e mounted 9 days ago with no issues at all also had the exact same tire mounted to my wife's fn fx pro 17x8's yesterday with no issues. Run from Mavis bc they are not a great place to deal with. Left Mavis/ntb for discount tire and haven't looked back.

Can’t exactly tell from the picture but looks like it could be a reverse drop. Sometimes you have to mount them with the wheel facing down and use a rubber adapter to hold the wheel in place then turn it back over to set the bead. It causes no damage to the wheel if done correctly. I get several a week on average.

I have the same size tire on the same size wheel. Mounted them myself ( I have a machine). If he had that wheel upside down that was the problem. The installed part of the bead has to be in the drop center area in order to get the rest of the bead over the rim lip, if that makes sense....
If the bead diameter of the tire was big enough to be up up on the bead area of the deep part of the wheel and still have enough room to go over the lip, the tire would never hold air lol. Tires ALWAYS get removed over the shallow side of the wheel whenever their is a width difference in the flange width or the tire and or wheel can be easily damaged. When properly done, especially on a tall sidewall tire, the tire should practically go on by hand. Find a new shop.
