Fire Extinguisher...get one!

Put out a buddy's '67 Ford one ton engine fire with that exact extinguisher a couple years ago.
Not refillable, that's when I upgraded to metal valves

10lb extinguisher is a bigass item to have floating around ur cab in a rollover, get that sucker tied down.
IIRC, a newborn coming home from the hospital in it's mother's arms, generates 600lbs forward thrust in a 30mph impact. (from a child's car seat ad)
The homemade quick release best be well engineered.
The Quick Release mentioned above (Post 149), tho pricey, withstands 27 G's. They make it for 2.5lb & 5.0 lb. extinguishers.
H3R Performance also makes a universal mounting plate, for the quick release, that is secured with ur seat mount bolts.
A 10lb extinguisher mounted in front of your seat will stay there, if your dashboard has infringed on your personal space.
Not to mention, if it breaks free, ur legs are at risk. 2.5lb extinguisher, not so much.
I would mount a 10lb, vertically to the back of the console or secured on the back hump behind it, still within reach.
I would also think it unwieldy in the cab, tho it would keep the flames at bay.
And if you have to completely discharge 10 lbs in ur cab, besides being in a world of shit, you best open a window, not to mention air bag powder.
Just food for thought. I hope you never need it.

My Amerex is tied down for now but that makes it slow to get too. While I understand the issues with mounting it in front of the seat, everything is a trade off. Until I have a built-in, I would like it to be in reach or deployable if I were trapped in the vehicle. A last ditch effort to prevent succumbing to fire or buying a little more time. I also intend to use it as needed to help others.
After a built-in, I would relocate it to the rear cabin with the same quick release.


After carrying and "USING" Big Box Store's extinguishers (Kidde, First Alert, etc.),
I've upgraded to refillable units with metal valves and hardware (preferably brass), Amerex, for example.
Tho I think some of the "Pro Versions" in those stores are refillable.
On the pros and cons list, I put my and my loved one's lives on one side and $$$ on the other, no brainer

This is also why it's a 10lbs.

One in the cab, one in the back.

 

I considered the same thing and when I go to 5 lbs that is how it will have to be. But at the price of these 3 lb BCs I can replace them periodically for quite awhile and still be dollars ahead.

 

Where did you get the mount?

 

I was helping a guy out years ago and his tank blew. It was one of those mounted between the cab and bed.

We were fine but it was a stark reminder that you can also just as easily die.

Would I still help someone? You betcha.

Engine fire. You pop the hood and it ventilates and the fire is immediately bigger.

I once used a five pound on an engine fire. It was Not a car but the motor of a hydraulic pump. It felt like I was pissing on the thing. It did nothing significant. The fire depot took it from there. I had one the size of my forearm in my Porsche. It would have been like farting it out.

 

Check your plastic handled and push button extinguishers. Chances are its been recalled.

So I'd like to post a few (more) comments about safety. If you've read my previous posts in this thread, it's clear, I believe safety is paramount.
My recommendations:
Don't buy a $5 Survival Knife
Don't buy a $25 Pistol or 50¢ Ammo
Don't buy a $35 Rifle
Don't buy a $45 Tire
Don't buy a $75 Parachute
Don't use Bungies in lieu of Tie Downs
Don't carry rags in lieu of a First Aid Kit
DON'T BUY CHEAP FIRE EXTINGUISHERS !!!
When it comes to safety, buy the best product you can afford.
When considering how much you can afford, include the value of your life and your family's lives, in the equation.
And buy a solid mount. If your 5lb or 10lb Extinguisher becomes a projectile in an accident, you may not have the opportunity to use it.
Failure to follow the instructions, may cause serious injury or death.

I have 2 fire extinguishers. Both have been recalled. Hopefully if there's a fire before the replacements arrive they'll work.

 

I tend to agree with everything you wrote. But when it comes to vehicle fire extinguishers its generally more about preventing property damage than safety. The exception would be coming up on someone else's accident with trapped occupants. In that case it would be great to have a 20lb extinguisher or better yet a pump truck for the once in ten or fifty lifetimes when it might be used. Most of us aren't long haul truckers, will never need that, and Tacomas are space limited. And honestly the window for effectively attacking a significant fire with an extinguisher is fairly brief. If it's a brush fire then a shovel is a better bet anyhow. Pretty simple stuff.

Edit - I'm addressing vehicle extinguishers here. At home I have a high quality ten lb rechargeable ABC extinguisher in the garage just off the kitchen and laundry. But even those won't handle a truly significant fire. Get everyone out first, dial 911, and THEN attack the fire if its safe to do so.

Yea...I'm not buying their conclusion without more information in spite of your bold text for unecessary emphasis. Either someone attacked a fire that shouldn't have been attacked with a tiny fire extinguisher that failed and Darwin got them or there was a very rare incident where a tiny extinguisher could have saved a life if it hadn't failed when no other responsible action could have been taken. The exception does not prove the rule unless you are a government bureaucrat with a rice bowl to fill.

After searching his bolded text, I pulled up an article page and I assume the death is referring to this:

"Incidents/Injuries: The firm is aware of a 2014 death involving a car fire following a crash. Emergency responders could not get the recalled Kidde fire extinguishers to work. There have been approximately 391 reports of failed or limited activation or nozzle detachment, including the fatality, approximately 16 injuries, including smoke inhalation and minor burns, and approximately 91 reports of property damage."

I guess in my eyes, I find it odd that a fire that happened and ensuing injury is then blamed on an extinguisher that malfunctions. Sounds like if a fire is that bad, the extinguisher wouldn't have helped anyway. And I honestly don't see why emergency responders are utilizing budget, small, plastic handle extinguishers unless maybe volunteers buying their own stuff?
