In my area, a bed mounted fire extinguisher wouldn't last more than a few days before it gets stolen. Whether it's a good or bad neighborhood, it doesn't matter. Kids looking for a cheap thrill would jump on it right away just for fun. They may even use it to spray the Taco. Unfortunately, this is how society is nowadays. No respect for others.

    Bumping an old thread here.

I have a 1st gen ext. cab and I saw Chris' mount on his 2nd gen in the bed.

I would like to mount a fire extinguisher in the bed of my truck but do not want to drill holes into the body. Not to mention my bed is Line-X'd. Any ideas on how to mount a fire extinguisher in the bed of my truck? Obviously I would like it to be as close to the tailgate as possible for easy access (just flipping the glass up on my topper and grabbing it)

Also, do fire extinguishers lose any performance in freezing temps? It was -4 here yesterday morning and I just want to make sure that, god forbid, if there is a fire in freezing temps, the extinguisher would still work.

I used self tapping screws on my First gen, and mounted it in the same spot. THe holes are small. I check the PSI in the extinguisher (look at the gauge) every some often, or when I put something in the bed. They seem to last for about 5 years or longer without issues.

Mine is right behind the driveseat. Might not be the best location in an X-cab but it's easy to get to for me.

How is it mounted? Just tapped screws into the plastic trim and that's enough to hold its weight?

AS Ive mentioned in the past, In a situation where your truck is on fire, your first reaction is to get out of the vehicle. I have seen a few vehicle fires, in which the fire extinguisher was left in the vehicle, as it was "glossed over" when faced with a need to escape. With the extinguisher mounted in the bed, when you are out of the vehicle, you can then think of a way to either fight it, or let it burn.

    Sound advice ^

I still think mounting one in the cab and one in the bed is that I want to go.

For inside the cab, consider an Halon (if you can find one) or an H3R. They are no residue fire supresion.

I dont think the averge person can buy a Halon fire extinguisher. And I don't think they make them anymore because the suppression agent is harmful to the environment...IIRC...

And if they do make them its for specialized industries and such.

But anyone can buy an H3r extinguisher.

Another option for residue free fire suppression is a CO2 extinguisher. Just dont be in a closed spacer when you use it, as CO2 is an asphyxiant in higher quantities in a closed space.

Yep. You'll notice it sits on the floor so there is no weight load that the bracket has to worry about. Just the strap to keep it in place.

I have a smaller version extinguisher than the one pictured above installed in my 2001 Double Cab. I put it behind the rear passenger seat. Marked with a sharpie where the bracket would line up so it would sit on the carpet as previously mentioned...

took the plastic trim off, (had to remove a seat belt bolt)
    Drilled hole
Used self tappers with drop of loctite.

*Depending on type of screws used and bracket, counter sinking the holes may aid in the extinguisher being able to sit flush into the bracket.

Anyone have any concepts for creating a mount to go on the bed rails so no drilling needs to be done, also done in a way that it does not sit to high so a cover can go on top. If you make it I will buy it!

This is my in-cab install. Have had it for ~5 months and not a single problem with it or passengers being there (the nozzle is pointed down now btw).

I also have on in the bed when my camper is off (ratchet clamps to a bed anchor) and I will be mounting one to the roof of my camper whenever I have a free day to work something out.

You could always get a pair of the hi-lift bed rail mounts, drill a piece of flat iron or something to fit, then fit a fire extinguisher with whatever mount you want and mount it to the flat iron portion. Should fit under any tonneau.

A nicer fire extinguisher like what is on the site OZ linked is perfect for a heavier duty setup.

Otherwise quickfist it in a corner or something.

those are both great ideas that I will probobly try to come up with. Gettig the flat iron is easy just not sure of the pieces to fit into the rail, I think something called t bolts or t nuts will fit. I'm lazy and was hoping someone already made this but I'll make an attempt at being a pioneer. Thanks
