Looks great. Are you going to stain it or paint it?

I bet you could get a sheet of Formica for the top cheap as hell from a big box store and that shit is nearly indestructible. Wuud is guud though. Classic.

Just primed the top and will add 2 coats of a flat white (makes it easy to see small gun parts, screws, pins, etc.) followed by a couple coats of a satin polyurethane. I'll poly the 1x2 maple that I'll put along sides and back. I have an absorbent, non-skid gun cleaning mat that will cover about 2/3rds of the top. No plans to paint or stain the rest.

I always covered my benches with Masonite, mainly because it’s quick, cheap and great for solvents. Also doesn’t splinter.

    Nice setup!

Thought I had a quart of white - nada. Had some light grey and got the first coat on with a zip roller. Still light enough for that contrast.

Does anyone know what type of hatchet this is? I’ve never seen one this size.

Looks Scandinavian, maybe an old school ice ax? But the collar and the angle of the cutting edge looks Scandinavian

I wondered if it was an ice axe. I’m just trying to figure out what I got!

@chiefcrunchy likely knows what it is. Whatever it is, it sure is pretty and something I would definitely keep in my recovery or camping gear box.

Not an ice axe. An ice axe would have a lanyard hole in the handle. Also, it would not have a cutting edge on the bottom of the hook. That edge would be flat to hold your weight when imbedded in the ice.
