Well, with the spinta, that would put me right about $600, so that could work.

Realistically, I don't have an optic and don't know that I'll get one. However, the last time I went to the range with a group, half of us had red dots. The other half did not. All the old guys with red dots had MUCH tighter groupings than those of us with iron sights. So I kind of want to keep my options open if I were to decide to get one down the road.

I saw that Beretta has an APX variant that looks decent and at a reasonable price. Didn't know if y'all had any others that I should consider. I'd rather get one that is good out of the box than purchase one and immediately spend a ton of money replacing what should be perfectly good parts.

Would he need the 509 tactical if he wanted the red dot options? If so, then I think that one is in another tax bracket of the budget if his front runner is the m&p 2.0.

With that being said, I do want me a 509 T haha

I'm not really familiar with FN. Quick Google search shows that Colin Noir is a big fan, so I'm guessing it would be a solid choice.

True, but I'm not ruling it out. I'd prefer not to drop $1k on a gun when a $500 one is "just as good."

But with that being said, I'm not exactly building my collection either. This will probably be the last handgun I buy for a while, so I don't mind spending the extra if it is worth it.

I stopped by a LGS sorta close to home today and the first thing the guy showed me was the Stoeger STR-9s Combat. I'm not familiar with them as a brand, so I don't really have an opinion other than I don't trust something I don't know. What I do know about it is that it felt balanced and fit my hand. It has raised fiber-optic sights and is optics ready. It has a threaded barrel, but I can't find any information on the thread pitch....on the box, in the manual, or online. My guess is a 1/2x28, but its a little concerning that it isn't readily available information. All for under $500.

    https://www.stoegerindustries.com/n...line-with-fully-featured-str-9s-combat-pistol

Also looked at (online) FN 509, HK VP9, Beretta APX, Springfield XD-M OSP, and the Walther Q4.

What pushed me toward the M&P originally is that I'm relatively familiar with it.

We carry stoeger pistols at our store, not a fan.
I prefer the M&P series, but the FN 509’s are good, the P320 series are good, the Caniks are good, and Shadow Systems are good but I’m the upper part of your price range (we sell them for about 800), the Walthers are good but limited holster options.

What is that top one in the image? Was the slide custom milled to accept the optic or using an aftermarket barrel?

What don't you like about the Stoeger?

I've never owned one so I can't say anything about if they are quality or not, but if it were me and I wasn't just buying this gun to add to my collection of many but wanted this to be my primary and was willing to spend more on it b/c of that, then I would stick with the more common brand/lines that have been proven by many. The M&P line, FN 509, Glock 19, Sig 320, and springfield xd line(not a fan) are all in the size range you are looking for. They can all be milled or come optics ready. Huge aftermarket presence for up grades, holsters, etc. All have been proven to be of good quality and either come with or have after market threaded barrels available.

Of course there are other brands out there of quality but in your size range I think these are the big hitters and you couldn't go wrong with any of them.

This seems like exactly what you're looking for but it's over priced. I'm just showing you there are alot of options for us in GA having the local forum theoutdoorstrader.com classifieds section. For the most part they are priced better and you can usually find almost anything in any set up you are looking for. Search theoutdoortrader classifieds and see what you can find. New stuff is posted pretty much every hour.

That FN 509 MRD LE was added the LA PD's duty roster recently after significant testing. There is always controversy about the how and why........

The entire backstory is still unclear. We do not know why he let his SOT expire. Also revealed was the fact that he is battling cancer, which may have been the impetus behind letting his SOT lapse. One thing is clear....the ATF is not screwing around....let your SOT expire and they are on your doorstep in a heartbeat.

The M&P up top is a Frankenstein gun, started life as an M&P 40 (Gen 1), served for an unknown amount of time with an unknown PD before getting bought by Buds gun shop or Ky Gun Co (I don’t remember which) where it was purchased from by my dad as a gift to 18 year old me, it stayed stock for a while and then I converted it to 9mm using a Silencerco 9mm barrel and then I acquired a spare slide, had the slide milled for the RMR footprint and then cerakoted Tan, and then put the 2.0 back strap on it. It’s truly a mix-mash of parts and with the .40 barrel and iron sights slide I carried it on duty as a reserve LEO.

As for the stoegers, they feel relatively cheap in hand, they don’t have a track record of any major length, and I don’t believe they’re near the same quality as the other guns mentioned, and with your budget there’s no reason to consider them (in my opinion).

I did read some things about it from what I got out of it is that Larry has some major health problems right now and his paperwork for the weapons in question was not renewed on time. Someone correct me if they have heard something different.

    Interesting.

As for the Stoeger, I think I've ruled it out. There is so little information about it available. Maybe I'll pick one up down the road just for fun, but with the "intent" of the gun I'm looking for now, I just don't see enough support from the market. There are exactly 4 videos on YouTube that cover that exact model gun and 3 of them feature the same guy talking about it and comparing it to other guns. The 4th is a crappy interview with someone from Stoeger that gives zero incentive or desire to try it. TheHumbleMarksman on YouTube does have some good things to say about it, but also mentions lack of holsters and lack of aftermarket support. I also haven't found many people talking about it on the internet...the best I could find was a post on Reddit that didn't sway me one way or the other.

I found the unicorn gun that S&W no longer produces. SKU is 10268: https://www.smith-wesson.com/firearms/archive-performance-center-mp-9-core-threaded-barrel

Apparently it has been discontinued, but could still be found at a shop somewhere. I found a shop that has it listed online that is based in Anchorage, AK, but it is not legit. I called the phone number on the website which wasn't valid. I then went to Google maps to look up the business and couldn't find it. Then the address on Google Maps and saw a vacant building. Finally some links to the BBB where numerous people stated that they paid for items and never received product. So hard pass on that one.

This site has it, but I don't meet their requirements: https://wvledguns.com/product/performance-center-mp9-c-o-r-e-threaded-barrel/

I found this one: https://www.smith-wesson.com/product/mp-m20?sku=13450 but it is a little pricey as it comes with the Crimson Trace already in the package (and also a boot knife). I'm not crazy about the FDE, but I'm not opposed either. Kind of wish I could find that one in black without the CT. I was talking to someone at the range yesterday and he said the best place to put that CT red dot was in the box it came in.

Another LGS has the M&P2.0 compact with the threaded barrel (or optic ready slide) for less than the other said he could get it for. So either the first one has volume discounts or bought it before a price increase. Right now, I'm kind of leaning toward getting the 2.0 compact and will cross the bridge of having the slide milled when/if I get to the point of putting a red dot on it.

Here ya go. Seems like a solid deal and already has a red dot you can choose to use or not. Sell it for $225 to recoup so cost.
