just finished this M4A1 SOPMOD Block II non-FSP tribute. Im calling it a tribute since the aim was far from clone correct, but more the spirit of the Block II. Block III URGI tribute in progress

That's awesome! Wish I had the skills and equipment available to fab my own stuff on a whim. I have an EPS on my ShaloTek slide, no plate needed, that shoots nice but I'm thinking about swapping it with the DPP NV on top of my AR right now for that enclosed emitter goodness.

I also fall into the "wish I had" category with this. I just mounted a 407k x2 on an M&P 2.0. None of the plastic plates that came with the pistol matched the 407k. I believe it was the "Type 2" plate that worked after being modified to remove the two rear posts, and shortening the front two.

So I made it work, but it would be much nicer to have an aluminum (or any metal) plate that was designed specifically for that optic. There is one available for purchase for $50. I'm going to see how I like the plastic one that came with the gun first. If it doesn't hold zero, I'll consider purchasing the upgrade.

I think red dots are inevitable.

I see more guns becoming available with factory milled slides or people just getting the surgery done themselves.

The range I go to in alameda has firearms training courses and I’m seeing more and more people show up with red dots on their guns.

Strangely enough, my insane county thinks that devices such as flashlights, lasers, and red dots have no place on a carry firearm… Because God forbid, you actually accurately identify your target.

I see the arguments for and against them. I shoot just fine with iron sights, so why/how did I justify the money to get the RDO?

I occasionally serve on the security team at church, and we have to qualify. The last qualifying event that I attended was pretty evenly split between RDO and iron sights. I was amazed at how much tighter the groupings were of those shooting RDO. There was no comparison. The people shooting with red dots had considerably smaller groupings than those who didn't. If the difference is that significant, and it helps me to hit my target and not miss, then it seems reasonable to think that I should "get with the times."

I find that during rapid fire drills I can reacquire my target faster and get smaller groupings with a red dot.

I’m still running tall suppressor sights as a back up, though.

    Same.

In fact, that is a requirement of mine. I will not replace a functioning no-maintenance (iron sights) with a functioning, but needs maintenance (RDO Battery) option. If I can't have iron sights as a backup, I'm not carrying that as a self-defense option.

My department switched over to issued Glock G45's with Trijicon RMR's from Glock G22's with Iron Sights in about 2021. They did so because in their research and testing, people using RDO's were more accurate and faster with little to no training. The biggest plus to the RDO is one focal plane when looking at the target...which is the target vs 3 focal planes with iron sights. On top of the one focal plane, you are now target focused and not sight focused. Which is useful for an LEO environment.

This rifle has never let me down, bought it off a friend about 7 years ago and have pumped thousands of rounds of cheap ammo through it. Lots of fun.
