Figured I’d get some insight from fellow Tacoma enthusiasts.. been thinking about purchasing my first hand gun. Not sure why I’ve waited so long but just wanted to see what recommendations I could get for a starter gun? I’ve heard great things about Glock not sure where to start though. Thanks in advance.

Don't listen to us internet nerds

Go to a range and rent anything you can that you might like

Pick the one you like shooting

1911 45 acp is my recommendation. What's your budget is going to determine what you buy. But going to a gun range and renting a few different guns is great advice. Don't U have any friends that shoot pistols?

First gun ever? Plans for it? Budget?

What you asked is pretty much the same as saying "I want to buy a car".

Going to a range and renting a bunch is definitely a good idea. A recommended gun might just not fit your hand as well as another.

"First handgun" assumes you've absolutely ZERO experience in the operation of one. My advise would be go to a range that rents, and find a 'qualified' handgun instructor. Safety is the most important part of this sport, hands down. It'll be money well spent in the long run. Learn first, learn right, then progress to the buying part. Shootin' ain't cheap, and the more you shoot, the better you'll get. With that in mind I'd recommend a .22 for starters. Shoot all day, and still have lunch money. With a 9mm etc, you'll be thinking this is waaay more expensive than you expected. There are some really good .22's out there for not a lot money. One I've found to be quite reliable, accurate, and economical too boot, is the Taurus TX 22 (I've 3). Feels full size, which helps a ton when/if you decide you like this sport and want to go onto something bigger. It's a great, fun sport that comes with some serious responsibilities. Good luck and enjoy!

You did not provide any additional criteria, so I would go with Glock 17 or 19.

This response from "That One Old Guy" is some very good advice and well thought out. Since this is your first handgun, I would follow his advice and take a class from a qualified instructor. After giving this some serious thought instead of the shotgun approach I gave earlier, a .22 caliber pistol would be a great 1st gun that would be fun to shoot, and cheaper than other calibers. I would also like to have you think about a revolver as a first gun. They're not complicated and generally very user friendly. Good luck in you decision and remember always keep safety in mind when shooting.

    Very important .
Do you intend on CC? Range only?
If so, keep in mind how much you want to carry concealed and at what time of year.
In warm weather T-Shirt time a large frame like a 1911 will print more than a Beretta Bobcat.
    Something to consider. :notsure:

And another very good point on your part, for the reasons you stated! My very first handgun was a Ruger Super Single Six .22lr/mag in stainless. Back when they cost less than $200. Only six shots definitely makes you learn sight picture!

I agree, go to a range or find some friends that have some you can test drive. The Glocks that are popular are not for me. Glad I shot some before buying one. They just don’t feel right in my hand and I didn’t shoot them worth a damn. So you definitely want to try before you buy.

You have a lot to learn before you purchase your first handgun. There’s a lot of very knowledgeable people here and some great advice. But do not go out and purchase a gun based purely on advice from the internet. I suggest you take some instruction from a professional instructor. An introduction to shooting. Your local gun store or gun range can direct you to a pro who can take you through the basics. They’ll teach you gun safety (which is the most important thing you can learn), basic shooting skills, introduce you to different handguns, different calibers, self defense etc etc etc. After one or 2 sessions you’ll have a much better idea what kind, brand and caliber you want. It’s possible you may even decide a gun isn’t for you. I can assure you the money you pay for a couple instructional sessions will be well worth it. Some places have introductory handgun classes in which you’ll be learning with other people just like you.

Thanks everyone. Very great information will definitely be looking for a range and some hand gun safety classes before purchasing. I’m really just looking for something to have at the house not carrying every day or looking to build a collection so I agree test driving some options is definitely the way to go appreciate the info. I’ll see what’s around my area and give them a call.

My experience, but others may disagree ...

I can shoot with my left hand, but not my right. In my right hand it feels like a chunk of metal I constantly need to readjust it. In my left hand it feels like an extension of my hand/arm and makes it much safer for me to handle. And not every gun I have tried feels comfortable in either hand.

The instructor will help much. Just one of a dozen things you must do correctly each time you shoot is to breathe in, then aim, then fire. Breathing after you aim ruins the aim. And yanking quickly on the trigger ruins the shot. Squeeze the trigger slowly. And those are just the beginning of what to do and not do.

460 is better if you're in the market for an xframe.

My latest build. Nothing fancy. Romanian md63. Was a preheadpsaced kit so build went pretty quick. Its got some nice "patina" too it so probably leave this one like it is. but put 10 rounds through it and it was right on target so cant complain.

It did have a split upper handguard so Ill eventually either fix it or just leave it as it
