Well I'm still in school so I have to start somewhere. I am looking for a stripped lower around town. Once I get that I will slowly build an AR10. I would like to hunt with it. I would also like an AK.

I might suggest an AR15 lower if you don't have any yet. That's a better first AR platform rifle than an AR10 IMHO. The AR10 can be a temperamental beast compared to it's smaller cousin.

No sir. AR15 uppers fit AR15 lowers. AR10 uppers fit AR10 lowers but even then you have different patters as nobody can settle on what is the best pattern for the platform. You've got LR308, AR10 and a few dozen manufacturers making some of each. It's also going to be difficult to find replacement parts should you subscribe to any sort of end-of-days type scenario. Stick with popular platforms in NATO calibers for your first few systems. Once you get those basics you can branch out but I highly suggest KISS for your starter systems.

Thanks guys! I think I might slowly be getting the handle of this, slowly. I have to find a reasonably priced lower first

AR parts are loosening up quick. I would be waiting instead of building at the moment. In a few months we will probably be in a spot where you can buy complete rifles cheaper than you can buy new parts and built simply due to all the guns that were scooped up in Dec and Jan that will be hitting the secondary market.

Now is the wrong time to be needing to do anything. Just wait a things will settle down quickly as stores are already getting inventory sitting on shelves once again. It will be a buyers market sooner than later.

Yeah I'm noticing stores are getting more in. I would buy a complete rifle but funds are somewhat short and I feel better buying in parts. I'm going to stay away from poly lowers, sound about right?

But I hate waiting :( but yes that makes total sense. Found a couple on armslist for under $850 in my area.

Sounds like a solid game plan. You'll learn a good bit about the rifle too which will help you down the road.

Me too, but something in my gut tells me that the ammo situation is gonna last till the end of deer season this year....after that, if say it will calm down.

That is my prediction, that it calms down after deer season, not that I am an expert by any stretch, just what I think (or hope is more like it)

It will. I've seen these buying frenzies come and go and this one will probably only last another few months barring any other unforeseen tragedies. Ammo won't settle too far and tends to hold some of the increase in price but lowers and such usually settle to pre-panic pricing. Something about ammo though it always tends to hold a little bit of the price increases once things settle down.

Surprisingly deer season and deer hunters don't soak up too much of the ammo because most don't shoot a lot. When you figure those that compete and shoot for hobby can go through thousands of rounds in a weekend pretty easily it would take a LOT of hunters to affect the supply lines. This shouldn't have too much of an affect on the current ammo market.

I'm thinking more along the lines of the hunters looking for ammo and not finding it then buying up more than they usually would because they are afraid of not being able to get it. I could see it creating another smaller panic

It's a drop in the bucket. Hunters don't traditionally follow the panic buying waves. They generally only need a few dozen rounds per year and the calibers they use also tend not to be the high volume types. Also, buying in particular slows in the winter months as well. We'll start to see ammo on shelves by the end of the month is my guess.
