A lot depends on where you live. I don't OC in the city, but in a small town in BFE it would be hard to find someone that isn't armed, it's part of the culture. Out here it's perfectly acceptable to come to a dead stop in the middle of the highway, poke a barrel out the window, and blast a coyote or other varmint (although technically not legal).

She got shoved back then the officer that happened to see it all stepped in. I dont know all the details because I wasn't there but my friend didn't want to press charges so she got to walk away.

I think you missed my point on size...anything shorter than an 18 inch barrel is NFA territory. Doesn't matter if it's .410 or 10 gauge. There's also NO reason to have a shotgun without a stock....so size doesn't matter between the .410 and anything else. The .410 is less than useful without decent defensive ammo. The 20ga has a bit less kick, but will have a negligible difference in terminal ballistics. I'm also not sure how it would be labeled uncommon. Now 16 or 10? Different story...

Not the video I was looking for, but it illustrates shotgun ammo and drywall pretty well. The "buck" range of loads will penetrate more than enough walls to be an issue. Bird shot is effective at close range (see my comments below) without the penetration.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C29mEJFFIvo

I've got 4 kids, 16 years old and down to 10. My room is at the back of the house, with their rooms between me and the rest of the house. As I'm moving out I will check their rooms before heading out because I want to positively know where they are...or if they are potentially at risk (hostage?).

I can't say I WON'T shoot if I don't know where they are and I'm faced with an imminent threat. But I will do my best to know before I'm put in that position.

Didn't miss it. I didn't address it, either. I don't believe a shotgun is the answer people think it is. The wrong ammo choice (e.g. buck shot) will penetrate walls, too.

You talk about choke, barrel length and shell type as factors. That's all true if there's time for the shot to spread. I used 30 ft as my distance because it's about the farthest two points in my house can get. The reality is things will happen at 20 feet or less in the typical home. A shotgun "pattern" at that point is a few inches. You still need to aim that. There goes the spray and pray method...

How about this...ever shot a shotgun with one hand? With a handgun I can maintain control of a loved one (hold them back, push them in the direction I want to go, etc) and still effectively present a handgun. Good luck with the shotgun.

I'm not against shotguns. If I had my preference, I'd be clearing rooms with a silenced bullpup or SBR (so I don't need ear pro). A rifle with a sling is really the best option if you ignore penetration. But then again, 55g .556 rounds keyhole pretty quickly after contact with the first wall. That's a ton better than pistol or 00 Buck.

Like I said...get training. It doesn't matter if you end up with shotgun, pistol or rifle...training is important. Training is also ongoing.

Oh, and avoid the suggestion of a "Judge" in California. For some reason it's considered a short barreled shotgun since it can shoot .410 shot shells.

One of my dad's Shriner buddies was the Las Vegas chief of police. He advocated shotgun, slug barrel, birdshot no bigger then #4. The mindset is the wall penetration issue, but also it is unsurvivable from a torso hit. There isn't anything left for surgeons to reassemble, and they baddies won't rob again. Old school.

The OC \ CC debate is very tiring. I see points to both sides and I think those points for and against each option depend on the person, and who that person may come in contact with, which is uncontrollable.

I think the OCers who carry slung rifles and shotguns are attention whores looking for trouble. However, the fella OCing with a glock in a OWB holster I don't find so annoying.

Personally for me, I haven't found an IWB holster I like yet, so my only options right now are hillbilly carry, or OWB. I like to cover it with my shirt, but most of the time they don't go down far enough to completely cover, and I'm not comfortable hillbilly carrying. I will also admit that I am not wanting to go back to a 38 waist pant just to carry, as I've done well to get back into a 36 so quickly.

    Like the Osprey45 or Osprey9.

Though those two arent perfect and still often need a bit higher than normal sights. Though my sig 226 the top of the sites fit flush with the top of the osprey

They announced 41P on the 4th. Trusts will need photos and fingerprint cards for all listed trustees on new applications. Looks like there will be no CLEO sign off for individuals, just notification, that will be a win for quite a few out there.
