Mine won't be carried as much as most people. When I feel the need I definitely will. Appendix carry is my go to. IWB. Some of my favorite shooters on IG conceal a 17 everyday.

There is a difference between the Beretta Nano and the PX4C Storm. I have the Nano, I know nothing about the PX4 series, they look like crap so I was never interested in them.

Had a guy at school offer to buy my AR pistol today, almost said yes but I know he would've wanted it to cheap.

Newbie to the gun world but I'm ready to make some purchases. Pretty much will be for home defense (not that I live in a bad area, and I also have an alarm system) and possibly some hunting. I want a shotgun and a handgun. For the handgun it needs to be small enough that my wife would be comfortable with it if she ever needed to use it. Any suggestions?

For a home defense pistol get a full size. Larger mags and generally less recoil compared to their smaller counterparts makes for a better self defense option

Plus larger semi autos are easier to rack the slide.

Go somewhere that has a range with rentals. Try as many as you can to find the one that fits.

For Handgun - Go to a local gun shop and handle as many as possible and get one that feels right and you're comfortable with. For a newbie, that's more important than caliber in my opinion. Having said that, 9mm is most likely a good candidate though...manageable recoil & affordable ammo. And I'd recommend sticking with one of the more reputable manufacturers.....Sig, Glock, S&W, Beretta, etc.

For Shotgun - Can't beat the good ole' Remington 870 - tons of accessories, barrels & parts available to alter for your evolving needs.

I have a 20ga for home defense. At the distances in my home, it's plenty. I had my grandfather's old Stevens pump shotgun cut down to 18", had the stock shortened for my size, had an internal choke added, a FO front site and removed the old dowel plug. I'm thinking that a 20ga is easier to control and should be more than sufficient should the need arise.

I took his 50yo $200 gun and made it mine. I love it.

Another option I'd suggest is beginning with a Ruger 22/45 in .22lr. Start small like the majority of people have. I started with a bb gun and moved up to a .22lr when my dad felt I was ready to do so. Cheap to shoot, insanely accurate and you can easily learn the proper dynamics and techniques of safely owning, handling and shooting a firearm. After you're comfortable with it, move up to a larger caliber of your choice. Join your friends at a range and shoot their guns. After you've moved on, toss the Ruger in the safe, and take it out plinking from time to time, as it is quite enjoyable to just burn through some 22lr.

This is of course, my personal experience, and others may have started out learning about guns completely different.

I'd agree with Quinton; learn the basics on a .22 and then move up. There's no cheaper way to get used to how a rifle handles and how to shoot.

I still have the single shot, bolt action .22 I used to hunt with as a kid. Good way to start. Cheap, fun, and simple.
You can get a new 10/22 for $150-$199 and you won't outgrow it. I have the takedown myself and it's a fantastic rifle.

I have a Winchester Model 67A that has been handed down in my family for now 5 generations. Absolutely my favorite gun to take to the range. Or, out my back door.
