The barrels have a 2500 round shot life .
And yes it is short action, so it doesn't kick the shit out of you.
I respect your opinion, but 1600 yards is definitely nothing to sneeze at

Distance isn't the issue. Any cartridge starting a high BC bullet faster than 2800fps can go the distance. Wind drift is what kills you. Even an extra 150fps can be the difference in a hit or miss past 1000 yards due to wind. More velocity is better to a point of barrel life. I'd guess the average shooter really shoots his rifle a couple times a year and may never put 1500 rounds down it in a life time. If you only have one and plan to shoot a lot, then yeah, the smaller rounds make perfect sense. I like to get several years out of my barrels. But, if I knew I'd be shooting less frequently in high wind areas, I'd trade barrel life for velocity every time.

Nothing wrong with the creedmoor. I shoot one frequently. It's just not my choice for windy days.

Well, obviously on windy days, no it would not be the bullet of choice. The guy was just asking information about my gun.
I Actually did weight out the barrel life differences in my decision in going between 6.5 and 6.
I actually enjoy trying to beet the wind at its own game.
And yes , if the shot is serious, than its no longer a game

I sawed the lever off my ambi CZ Scorpion safety today. One of the worst designed safeties I've ever heard of. Pokes your finger something awful. 5 minutes with a hacksaw, file and sandpaper and it's done. Love everything else about the pistol though!!!

First, what do you realistically plan on shooting distance wise and how much? Reload or shoot factory? A lot of things will get you past 1000 yards, but I know how frustrating shooting in the wind can be when it never stops. Of course the 6.5 creedmoor will work and I didn't mean to imply it wouldn't, but there are better rounds for long range wind. Wind is what keeps you from hitting, not distance. I only spoke up because you were talking about getting a rifle for 1000+ yard shooting in a windy area.

I really like the 6.5-284 because there are good rifles, from starter type rifles to advanced to fit most budgets, and the brass is really good. It has good velocity, decent barrel life, and available ammo. It seems to offer the best balance of velocity, recoil, and barrel life. There are bigger 6.5s, but they are really for people with unlimited amounts of money to rebarrel or for hunting purposes where the round count will be small. I played with a 6.5STW for awhile that was for hunting only once loads were developed. I can't imagine how bad the newer 6.5s like the Nosler or Weatherby are on barrel life. But, regardless of barrel life, more velocity equals less wind drift.

The 6.5s aren't the only game in town either. It just seems they have a good balance of recoil and barrel life. An 8 twist 243 shooting 115 DTACs or a 7mm SAUM/WSM shooting 180s are great too, but have short barrel life and are reloading only. My next rifle will be an 8 twist 243, but I have to finish burning the 243 I currently have. My 7SAUM doesn't get shot that much because of added recoil.

I'd love to be able to hit 1000 yards maybe further. Currently it would be with factory rounds since I don't have the equipment for reloading but eventually I want to get into it since my 284 winchester is hard to find ammo for and my grandpa gave me a bunch of brass for it. Currently I'm working all the time usually 6 days a week so I wouldn't be taking it out all the time maybe once a month for not until I can start taking more time off.

I've got a sight pusher so it wasn't any big deal :) Just order the sights for the gun, I don't think the Pro-Dots are available but the Tritium I-Dot sets are pretty much the same, very quick sights for C.C.

The creedmoor would probably be better for factory ammo price wise than the 6.5-284. You can also get into a creedmoor pretty cheap too, although many of the lower priced rifles are more for normal hunting and not long range shooting. If you were going to limit most of your shooting to around 900 yards, a 308 would be very economical for factory target ammo. There are several different factory loads with SMKs for the 308 that are decent priced. Almost all the really good VLD bullets will require handloading, regardless of cartridge. Berger and Lapua do have some really good factory loads, but they are limited and expensive. Nosler loads some with the LRAccubond, but again expensive.

Whatever you end up getting, practice is the key. You don't have to shoot a lot each time, but you do want to be familiar with it. I usually shoot 3 or 4 rifles each time I'm out. I get plenty of trigger time and round count stays low enough on each rifle.

Once you start reloading, it's a whole nother world. You start buying bullets by the 500 or 1000 and spend all your free time shooting and reloading. You don't save any money reloading, infact you may spend more, but you shoot a lot more than before.

I definitely support him on what he's saying here on the .308 & trigger time. If you really don't plan on going much past 1000 yards, than the .308 would definitely be clean choice for you, the .308 doesn't go transonic until around 1100 yards out & it would tolerate the wind better than the 6.5. Making it a good economic shooting round for 1000 yards. I picked my set up because I needed something new to replace the old & I'm an accuracy junkie, So I love numbers & the 6.5 creedmoor is just a far superior round to the .308 for reaching out. I reload, but the (factory rounds) are so dam good you really don't even need to reload, but like I said already, I'm a numbers junkie. So I choose to reload. Isn't It great that we can talk about shit like this in America :oldglory:
