Wow. That is pretty damn cool. I'm actually putting this on my list for considering when I get my bonus next year.

    I've got a big dilemma.
    I'm gonna get a M&P 40, but i don't know if i want the 4.25 or the 5 inch barrel.
It'll be a HD, woods, and plinking gun, but i'll also keep it in the truck, i'm leaning towards the 5'' based off my uses.
    Thoughts?

IMO the only reason to go with a smaller gun is for concealed carry. If that isn't what it's going to be used for then get the longer barrel.

What's everyone's opinion on Hi-Point firearms? I know, they're cheap and I don't expect it to be anything that's going to knock my socks off but they also seem like a fun shooter. I'm specifically looking at picking up a used .40 carbine.

Everything I've heard about Hi-Point carbines is that they're actually quite good for the money.
Their handguns, on the other hand, are a different story.
My dad has one of their handguns in 9mm. No drop-free mag; only holds 8 or 9 rounds (don't remember which for certain), and it's terribly inaccurate. Fit and finish isn't that great, and it doesn't feel "right" in my hand.

On the other hand, the carbine of theirs that I shot was great. Lots of fun, accurate, it fit my hand properly. I don't remember if the mag dropped free when released or not, and some of the finish was kind of basic/crude. However, you can't expect $1000 finishes on a $300 gun...

That's sort of what I expected to hear. I don't mind buying an inexpensive gun, I just want to make sure I'm not wasting my money on a cheap POS that is no fun to shoot. I want to make sure it'll hold up and be relatively accurate, or at least consistant. I'll be building up my own AR for the nice, crisp shooter, I'm debating picking up a Hi Point for a down and dirty range gun.

Nearly every review I've Read online about them has been positive. I also don't see them pop up for sale used that often, which seems to suggest that the people who own them like them and keep them, rather than trading up.
I saw that there's a new Taurus carbine on the market the other day; not sure on an MSRP though. Maybe check that out?

That's just it, I'm not in the market for one, a used one just popped up locally at a good price and I'm having a hard time overlooking it. I'm finding similar reviews online about Hi Point as well. For an inexpensive gun, everyone seems to really enjoy shooting them!

why not build a non-numbers matching AK for less than $500 that shoots some of the cheapest and widely available ammo out there?

They have more than doubled in price over the last few years. You use to be able to pick up carbines for under 200 bucks. (what they were worth)

Now at the price they are selling for there is no way Id consider one.

a 10/22 will be much cheaper to shoot. If you already have one thats ok, get another and mod it differently than the other one :D

At this point, I'm just between whether to buy the Hi Point or not. I honestly just started researching an AR build since it's all new to me, I'm not savvy enough to piece together an old firearm, I don't know enough about the parts and pieces to be confident I've done it correctly. I might check that out though, sounds like a fun option!

I have been poking around looking at an SKS, haven't looked into an AK much though.

I think the 10/22's are cool, just not my cup of tea just yet. I want to build one up eventually, but it's further down my list. I have a 22 pistol that I like to shoot but will be putting off my 10/22 purchase/build for a while. I want to get an AR built up first and that's going to take me a little while.

SKS's and AK's are also both way overpriced at the moment. WASR AK's were selling for 400-450 before this last gun scare. Id like to have one but not with a $700 price tag:eek:

Get an SKS if you can! Great plinker that shoots real rifle ammo. There is a bunch of good info on AKFiles.com

Honestly, if you really like guns, you should build at least one AK. It really makes you appreciate the down and dirty craftsmanship that goes into stamped steel guns. You can't just stick it in a CNC mill and hit a button. You have to bend, grind, weld, hammer, sand blast, parkerize, etc.

I built my AK without any previous experience of gunsmithing and it was an absolute blast. My AK is my baby now. Not the prettiest, or most accurate of any of my guns, but it's my favorite. And it cost me under $500!

Did you ever see the thread online where a guy build an AK out of an old shovel?

^ yea! that thread is what first turned me on to building ak from parts haha. The only part that was made from shovel was the receiver and stock. The rest are from parts kits you can buy for around $300.

Here's the parts I collected for my Yugo M72 RPK build. I just need to de-mill and drill out the rivets and I'm ready:
    photo2-34_6c3cc96dc2d6f643316783e4c74788ef4a6bea84.jpg

Money into parts is a little over $600. Fully built RPKs go for just under $2000 new!

I hear you there. Every once in a while an SKS will pop up between $3-400, no way I'm paying $700, not for that.

I do really like guns, the problem is my wallet doesn't  Honestly, one of the best experiences I had so far was tearing down my Mosin and stripping the cosmoline when I first got it. That's actually the first thing I've done to any firearm I purchased, tear it down, see how it works and get familiar with it. There are a lot of firearms I would love to own and build, just lack the funds to do it all right now. For the money, I might have to give some consideration to building an AK first. I've been researching an AR build and quickly found out that the one I want to build is pretty damn expensive! I briefly considered building a 'budget' AR and dismissed it, if I'm going to build one, I'm building what I want.
