Haha tactical 30-30! I'd like to pick up some see through scope rings and a decent optic for it though..

I was kidding about the rails on mine.....rails on a lever gun are sacrilidge lol

the one I posted is a winchester '94 made in 1914. I'd put a rail long enough to mount a scope an be done with it....if you are insistent on putting on optics (dont know if youare)

a good choice for optics for a lever gun (in my opnion) would be one of the older 2 or 3 or 4x scopes that had a post reticle on it

The '68 336 I picked up has a simple 4x scope on it. I've yet to go to the range to sight it in. Ammo is kinda hard to find since it's a .35.

I like the ghost rings on that but don't like the full rail. and .35 is almost easier to find here than 30-30 is, I'd check gun shops rather than walmart and dicks and what not (I dont know where you looking now).

I would personally rather a low power scope on one. A fixed 4 power sounds great to me for a lever gun.

I've got a 336 gold trigger that I think I am gonna put a receiver sight on, more accurate than buck horns but doesn't change the balance like a scope can.

You may want to consider getting that appraised first. It looks like it's a fairly old Winchester, and some of them are worth some $$ (I have a 1906 take-down in .32 Winchester Special that I stopped hunting with after I got it appraised and found out how much it was worth). It'd be a real bummer to devalue an expensive piece that way, rather than picking up a cheap 80's beater gun to do it with.

I was kidding about that, just wanted an exuse to show off my '94. That particular gun was manufactured in 1914, I am planning on getting a letter from the Cody museum for the gun as well.

Phew. That's good to hear. I hate seeing classic guns hacked up by somebody who wants something "tactical" but doesn't want to spend the money to actually get a tactical gun. Drives me up the wall, it does. Mossberg actually makes a tactical 30-30, believe it or not. It comes with a flash supressor, rails, and a LOP-adjustable stock.
Ironically, though, if I'm remembering correctly it's got a lower capacity than the standard version of the gun, 5+1 instead of 6+1. And it's still tube-fed, so there's no way of increasing the capacity. Strange.

Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...
nowadays tactical means it's black and has rails to thrown on accessories...lol

    This is true.
My cousin asked to borrow my "tactical shotgun" the other day. I was confused because I don't actually OWN a tactical shotgun. Turns out he thought that my Remington 887 Nitro Mag was a tactical gun, because it's black. Lol...the thought of that gun as a tactical gun... 3+1, with a 28" barrel.

I've seen that gun....ugly as hell lol. A lever gun can be used very well for home defense, especially if you have something like a .44 mag with a good set of ghost rings on it , maybe a flashlight attached to the mag tube.

I personally want to see about getting a .45 colt lever gun that is beefy enough to take my hand loads that it load for my ruger Blackhawk (they are sledge hammers out of the black hawk and I want to see them out of a rifle).

My '94 has been in my family from my grandfather to my dad to me, I don't know anything beyond that though. I am probably gonna get a Cody museum letter soon as I said to see what the rifle actually came with. I am thinking about finding a period correct tang sight for it as well

And a screwdriver can be used as a hammer. I'll still take the hammer for nail driving and save the screwdriver for screws.

I actually want to see if I can find a beat-up lever gun in 30-30 or similar cartridge that I can have Duracoated and use as a trunk gun. Or maybe in .357...

I haven't heard very many glowing reviews of Duracoat. Cerakote, on the other hand, seems to have much better reviews as far as it's ability to take a beating.

The local gun shop does Duracoating. He's an ex machinist who got into gun smithing as a hobby and now he does the gun smithing full time and does machine work as a hobby. He sings high praises for Duracoat, and he's done a lot of it for the locals.
Of course, since he's the one doing the work and getting the business, his opinion on Duracoating has to be taken with a moderately large grain of salt.

It could also be that Cerakote is easier to apply as a DIY'er. If he knows what he's doing, preps it correctly, who knows, it might work perfectly. I don't have either one on any of my firearms so i don't have a dog in that fight. :)
