I picked up a Tikka t3x lite in 308 today! Ordered a Mountain Tactical rail for it. Now I just need scope rings, a scope and some ammo!

Realistically I'll be shooting mostly between 100 and 500 yards. The rifle is going to be used to shoot paper 90% of the time.

With that in mind does anybody have any suggestions for rings and a scope? I'd like to keep it under $500 for the scope. I know that doesn't buy much but it will be enough for my purposes

If you're looking for something for personal defense, .22 really isn't the way to go. .22's against humans have a reputation for hitting their target, not slowing it down in the least, and then causing them to suddenly drop dead a couple of days later. Get a rifle in a larger caliber, or, if you're worried about weight, a revolver or pistol in a larger caliber.

It is a survival rifle, not a defense rifle. ;)

If you guys haven't seen it, go look it up. Compact, it comes apart, and stores in it's watertight stock. Pretty cool.

Pretty sure a shotgun is going to help you survive more than a .22. You can shoot a shotgun and scare bears away, and it's much more forgiving (with the appropriate shells) when you need to use it to hunt.

and... you can break a shotgun down and store it in a watertight case.

    what he said
and if you can stand the weight of a double barrel, you could have a slug or buck shot in one and like #6 in the other and kill anything that moves
