Check local, state laws. Send in your Form 4, $200, and the will to live through the agonizing pain of waiting for it to return. Form 4 individuals through NFATracker are topping 317+ days, just passed my 10 month mark on a Form 1 individual. @Sleipnir created a wait thread, maybe one day someone will graph our times and get an average TW time. One week left on silencershop's $200 rebate, technically transfer for free.

Should I go through a trust or individual? I've always heard people say to go through a trust to avoid at will searches or something like that. :notsure:

Urban legend. The only people who are subject to unannounced ATF searches for NFA are Class 3 dealers.

Thanks. I wasn't finding anything about it when I was looking. Seems like individual filing has gotten a lot easier lately too. Silencerco makes it seem that way at least

Google "NFA Myths" but take all info with a grain of salt. Thee is a lot of misinformation out there. I did months of research before I dove in. Think about what you would want to see happen to the items if something happens to you, they could be a pain in the ass to whoever is going to do your estate. This is where a trust could make life easier for them, they could either take permanent ownership or liquidate them with a lot less effort.

That was one huge draw of the trust with the other being you didn't need the chief LEO to sign off on you getting it and being fingerprinted.

Now you need fingerprints no matter what (individual or trust) and you don't need the signature if you are filing as am individual.

How much does it usually cost to set up a trust? For my situation I don't think it would be much better or worse to go either way. So really it would be a matter of whether a trust is convenient enough to spend the extra time and money on it.

Trusts & LLCs allow you to have multiple "possessors," or people who can legally possess that item at anytime. It also CAN give you one place to put al of your NFA and regular firearm items. Some allow you to put even your magazines into the trust, so if you fear a capacity ban coming to your state, any of the trustees would be leagal possessors of the banned capacity.
Basically it can be estate planning and protection for your firearms collection.
Trusts were big mostly due to no CLEO sign off and no finger printing.
Some forms can be done electronically with Trusts and Corporations (presently I believe you can still do a form 1 (SBR, SBS...), but no Form 4s). E-file has been suspended.

Individual buyers were more difficult due to need for CLEO sign off (some wouldn't do it, or required justification, or just wasted your time and money). Individual ownership has its perks, cheaper up front (a trust can run anywhere from $50 to $1000 pending the level of trust) and the ability to sell it to your trust should you choose to do so later.

Talk to your LGS, most have association with some good trust attorneys and will give you their information so you can find out pricing and coverage. Can also help you understand your local laws regarding NFA items.

Still can't do Form 1 or 4 electronically, only paper. No more CLEO sign off, all they ask is you send the third copy of your form to your local LE's NFA/ATF "division". Maybe I'm wrong but it doesn't matter if it's Individual or Trust, engraving is required. City, State, and First/Last name for Individual, City, State, Trust name for Trust.

Didn't know they suspended all e-file now. I filed my SBR form 1 e-file. It was the best (of a dumb system)!

And you're right, my brain escaped me, yes any item you manufacture for submission (form 1) must be engraved.

Yep, the 41f change stopped f1 and f4 electronic forms I believe last May. It was a good system for what it was, really cut down on times. The fastest I saw was a 3 week emailed approval, then another week before it was in his hand. Are you still waiting for a electronic form 1? They should have all been looked through by now.

I'd like to hear about it. I want to add some new flavors to the ice cream menu.

What's the difference between the fn509 and fns9? I googled them and they look very similar.

Just got my form 4 approved in May for a rim fire suppressor and once I get my trust info updated (moved to a different state) I'll be submitting a form for a griffin optimus.
If you have additional questions to what has already been answered feel free to PM me and check out the NFA thread in the guns/hunting sub-forum of TW.

They are very similar, with a few "adjustments" basically to improve on the FNS

I own an FNS and it's a fine pistol, but it's almost too rough of a grip so that alone for me is a big improvement

Rimfire is what I'm buying as well. There's just something appealing to having a gun actually almost being silent.

Nah I completed my SBR 2 years ago. That's probably why I didn't realize they suspended e-file.
