You can get a carbine in a pistol caliber if all ur shots are gonna be inside 100 yards a .357 mag out of an 18" barrel or so should be plenty in the kill zone, if your concerned you could get a .44 mag in a lever gun too, or you could skip the rifle all together and go straight revolver, seems like the perfect brush gun haha @JDAM

It just seemed like 30-06 was overkill for the short range I shot this year. We've hunted some San Juan Island blacktail over here which are small and it's shotgun or handgun only. 12 gauge slug seemed like too much as well. Could have used the S&W .44 mag.

Is buck shot legal there? Another good short range option

Picked up some patches and round balls, each 0.005” larger than what I had. I guess it’s true what they say about tighter bores. Top group was 0.535” ball with 0.15” patch. Bottom is same ball with a 0.20” patch. Almost no vertical dispersion at 50 yds. Both 3 shot groups.

Hey all so I got an old CVA kentucky rifle that was built from a kit, I brought it out yesterday to try and fire it and no dice. I believe the issue I'm having is with the caps/nipple. From all the videos I've seen the caps seem to fit fairly loose and mine is very very snug, I've tried both # 10 and 11. The charge and ball is seated all the way down??? :help::notsure:. Anyone have any ideas/ suggestions

Have you put a wire nipple cleaner down the nipple and has the nipple been peened over at all?

I have not however I don't believe that to be my main issue is I can't even get the cap to fire just a click every time so I ordered a new #11 nipple so hopefully that will remedy it. And if it doesn't ohh well I got it for free but I've never had or even fired a traditional muzzle loader I have a modern in line CVA that I use for hunting but there's definitely something about pouring powder down the barrel that is almost intoxicating to me soo ya hopefully she goes bang in stead of click sometime here in the near future.

I like your description, because that is so true! The great thing in your favor is, there really isn’t a whole Lotta movable issue parts. They’re very basic. So you shouldn’t have a hard time figuring out why it doesn’t functioning right, good luck with your new nipple

It is possible that your hammer spring has gone week. Does your hammer bounce at all when it comes down on the nipple?

Negative I just checked and it definitely doesn't bounce at all it was a kit gun that was put together by God knows who so this also could be an issue but like you said there's very few moving parts so I should be able to figure it out.

Snug is ok. Clean out the nipple and get some new caps. I had some that I thought were ok but they were old and didnt fire.

Look for these caps. They are a couple bucks more but They are a little hotter firing and work in my Hawken side cock muzzle loader. Im also putting these in an airtight box. I dont trust leaving them out even if its dry.
