I was already thinking about switching to a lever action for deer hunting in the thick woods. My shots have been around 40 yards. Although I haven't taken a shot through brush like that. I was thinking about a 30-30. Dad has a .35 Remington that took two this year. I'm still not likely to shoot through that much brush though.

Wonder what the results would be using the Hornady leverevolution rounds since it's not a typical round nose.

My 30-30 is more accurate at middle distances with the Leverevolution than traditional round-nose, but I don't know if they carry any extra speed or power.

I use a Marlin 336W in .30-30 with iron sights for deer and elk when I know I'll be in heavy timber. We don't have a lot of brush per se but the light weight and shorter barrel are perfect for hiking around in tight trees, especially with as much beetle kill as we have now.

Mine too. I like this ammo more than the old Core Lokt that I've shot forever.

I still use the Core Lokt in my .35 because it really does work awesome, but at 200 grains that has the ballistics of a mortar regardless of the tip :notsure:

The 30-30 stockpiles are gradually being replaced by the Leverevolution, and I'm starting to do the same with the .32spl, when I can find it.

Not yet. It's on my to-do list, but it's a big initial investment so I keep talking myself out of it :anonymous:

You can get a carbine in a pistol caliber if all ur shots are gonna be inside 100 yards a .357 mag out of an 18" barrel or so should be plenty in the kill zone, if your concerned you could get a .44 mag in a lever gun too, or you could skip the rifle all together and go straight revolver, seems like the perfect brush gun haha @JDAM

It just seemed like 30-06 was overkill for the short range I shot this year. We've hunted some San Juan Island blacktail over here which are small and it's shotgun or handgun only. 12 gauge slug seemed like too much as well. Could have used the S&W .44 mag.

Is buck shot legal there? Another good short range option

Picked up some patches and round balls, each 0.005” larger than what I had. I guess it’s true what they say about tighter bores. Top group was 0.535” ball with 0.15” patch. Bottom is same ball with a 0.20” patch. Almost no vertical dispersion at 50 yds. Both 3 shot groups.
