I want this. Cabelas has it for $399. Between Amazon and eBay, it is as low as $311.

Because I am new to owning a gun, and you seem to have a little larger of a knowledge base, why pass?

I went looking for it and the roughly comparable product is the TLR-2 G. Have you had experience with both brands? Just heard from another guy today that said he has the Viridian and the thing crapped out on him after an hour of shooting and it is not due to the battery. I didn't find the Streamlight TRL2 on Cabelas site for a price, but it looks like it is about $150ish compared to the Viridian at $400.

I wouldn't use one other than for training purpose to see how your trigger discipline is when dry firing. No sense paying that much money for that use. Seems like a waste of money to me. Especially if you're newer to firearms as you stated. There's FAR better ways to spend your money.

We've had a couple streamlights and no problems. Would buy them again.

    Ammo to practice with

I picked up 1000 rounds from High Country or something like that online. 115 gr 9mm and found that it would go about 5" into a piece of firewood before stopping.

My thought on that Viridian unit was that it has the green laser as well as a light. The light is programmable as well to various configurations. From what I have read, a green laser is more visible than red, especially in areas of higher light levels, such as daylight. I want my wife to also be recent using the gun as well, so that is why I am looking for the laser. Having a light on as well is a bonus, but also good for the possibility of and intruder in my house in the dark.

Get an X300 or TL1R for a light if you need a good light. Having all sorts of settings and adjustments and levers is the last thing you want in a SD situation, especially for your wife. There is no replacement for practice and this applies to both of you. Lasers are for Hollywood.

I have thought about, and started looking into night sights. I think the laser is more of the type of thing that in a panic, a grip laser is a good way to make sure aim is there. I do think you are right about extra levers/buttons being a bad idea in the situation.

The hardest thing right now is getting the wife to go outside and shoot. I've had the gun about 3 or 4 weeks now and she hasn't shot it yet.

You definitely want NS if there's a possibility this firearm could ever be used for SD.

Buy her a beginner's course for firearms class. Make sure the instructor is experienced with those new to firearms & that the class meets the requirements for CCW in case she wants to apply. Regardless of how much you know about firearms I don't recommend you try teach a significant other of they're new. Best move you'll make is having a pro that isn't you teach her.

Every time I try to get out to shoot, she shoots me down. The gun is more for me than her anyway but it would be nice if she would go shooting with me sometimes.

We are also getting ready to move across the state (some 325 miles or so) and she has mentioned that she would be okay with me taking up hunting. Of the places we looked at, several have deer that wander through regularly, and at least one of them had turkeys as well. Another one was close to a quarry that has riding trails, sounds like mostly dirt bikes, but I am pretty sure there are spots to shoot at.

I'd pass on that, Id go with a streamlight or surefire and a safariland holster that accepts the light.

While we are on the topic of Light and Lasers. take a look at this article. A while back I had a discussion about lights with my buddy, and he mentioned that he would not use a WML, and if he did it would be in quick burst.

the thing about lasers and light at night is It make it easier for the other person to find you... under stress I don't need to worry about employing a lasers, All i want to worry about is identifying my target, sight alignment, and trigger squeeze. I still thing the new streamlight with 300 lumens is WAY too bright for indoor use.

The laser will help her but if she flinches while squeezing the trigger its no good. 1/8 of a muzzle movement will change the POI 5" at 25 feet, 4 inches at 20 feet.

I tend to agree with 300 lumens being too bright and that's why I use a TLR1 even though that might even be a little too bright.

For those that think that sound crazy, set your X300 (or whatever light you plan to use) next to your bed when you go to sleep. Set your alarm for 3:00am and when that alarm goes off grab your light and turn it on and you'll see what I mean. Prepare to be blinded.
