ok so i looked when i got home last night and can confirm it is a rem 742, as far as what i plan on using it for, i'm not sure i like to hit up the range from time to time, i don't really hunt but i like to know if i want to shoot farther than my front porch and be accurate i can.. thinking maybe this is good to just set up and find a better rifle... any thoughts?

I've owned countless 742's, 7400's and 760's. Take it to a gunsmith and have it serviced if you don't know how to. They are called "jammasters" because people don't know how to keep a rifle clean. I have shot over 500 rounds out of mine and never had the slightest hicup. They are not a match shooting rifles but I've shot my far share of deer out to 250 yards. I can keep a 2-4 inch group at 200 yards. If your looking for a plinker to shoot out to 200 yards or so, it will be fine. If you want to go 500+ yards and be very accurate, you should get a different rifle more suited for accuracy like a bolt action.

Sounds like a good starter rifle to me. Shoot it and figure out where ya want to go from there

The 742 is a great all-around or starter rifle. They have an undeserved reputation for reliability issues, because people don't keep the gas system clean. Google 'Remington 742 deep clean' or something similar and you'll find a bunch of information on how to keep it running like a Toyota. They'll shoot minute-of-deer very reliably out to about 200 yards with a good, basic scope. But don't spend $500 on a scope for this one. A $100-$150 unit will be more than accurate enough for a 742.

Now, if you're looking for something that you can use for a 600 yard gun, I'd suggest looking elsewhere, honestly. Something in a bolt action, with a fully bedded stock, adjustable trigger, etc.

They had a barrel recall. Apparently there was a risk of certain serial #'s having barrels with bad heat treating that could asplode. Mine had a couple thousand rounds through it with no issues, but I sent it back anyway to be on the safe side.

I have one. Pretty fun little plinker. Bought a second 25rd mag, scope, and bipod for it. Haven't had any issue with it to include different ammo types.

    picatinnny quad rail.

one thing to keep in mind is that this is just a 702 plinkster action w/ a plastic stock/casing to make it look like an AR.

Shrug. No different than my Ruger ranch rifle. Came with a wooden stock and I switched it out for a poly folder w/a pistol grip

Sounds like a perfect rifle to throw a basic BDC scope on and run as-is. Check to make sure your BDC will match your loads you plan to run, but I know a 30-06 is probably a common one to look for. For reference, my basic hunting scope is a Bushnell Banner w/ CF500 reticle, good to 500 yards with most common high-velocity loads.

Here's an example, 10mph wind from right with a 150gr Federal Fusion on a whitetail at 300. Rangefinders make this a simple shot. (app is strelok Pro)

My dad asked if he could use myyyy gun for an Elk trip he’s going on so we went out and did some shooting. Pushed the zero back to 200 yards and tried a few different rounds to see what was shooting the best. .300 win mag isn’t necessarily to the most enjoyable thing to shoot all day, but it beats .338 for sure.

An Elk hunt is on my 'someday to-do' list. Had BBQ'd elk steak once when I visited an uncle out west and it was absolutely awesome. Been dreaming about putting one in the freezer ever since

How much am I looking at to have my factory M&P slide cut for a Vortex Venom? No other work needed other than suppressor height sights.

Why not pick up the CORE slide which is pre-milled? They drop into 1.0 and 2.0 frames without modifications
