I like nice gear, but I'm not going to knock someone for having functional-but-eh stuff. That said, if you can't afford nicer gear than that, you likely can't afford the range time, ammo, and training it comes with responsible gun ownership.

Yes, true for people that absolutely have to hunt with an AR. But the rimmed (non AR) options are better, 357max, 460s&w, 44mag, 45-70.

easy here, If you have your concealed weapons permit go to local gun store, pick out your firearm of choice and buy/take it home that day! Look in classifieds Face to face buy take home that day. gun shows are similar. Here we can open carry and concealed carry. Now our neighbor state to the west is different. We had to get our "enhanced concealed" weapons permit to carry concealed in Washington. Oregon doesnt even honor Idaho enhanced weapons. Idaho honors most out of state concealed weapons but you have to check the list. still a good 2A state IMO...

Agreed. I just bought a S&W Shield 9mm, paid $179.00 and still ask myself whether it was worth it. I am not trying to compare to a high end 1911 or even a more moderately priced Sig, FNH or HK. It just doesn’t have a great feel but will be an acceptable fishing gun or one you might let a buddy carry.

I pocket carry so a red dot will not work for me. I think I would use a red dot for home protection or a range gun. just my .02

My main mode of carry is pocket carry. It draws far less attention. Having a red dot mounted on a glock 19 or 26 would just add a snag factor I would not want to deal with in a bad situation.

    CC gun? No.
    Range toy? Sure.

If you get accustomed to seeing the dot when training, you will look for that dot everytime you draw that firearm.
What if that dot doesnt present itself (dead battery, malfunction, environmental factors)? You will still try to find it.
    Less is more.

I wouldn’t mind a red dot on my concealed carry once I train with my M&P with a dot more.

I don’t carry that often so my pistol is set up for home use. It has a CT railmaster pro, which has the red dot and flashlight built in. Rather then removing it, when I carry, I just leave it on. Long term goal would be a different carry gun but for me, it works ok for now.

Were you looking for advantages and disadvantages?

*Becoming dependent on the dot would be a def down side, if you don’t actively train without it on.

No. Carry is for SHTF. Turning on a red dot when SHTF is NG.

I also would never mount a flashlight on a SD weapon. Nice bright light just gives the perp something to aim at.

If you're raiding meth houses and clearing rooms, yeah, a flashlight would probably be useful.....

Trijicon dual. Uses fiber optic and tritium. No need to turn on. Works fine for carry, if you’re conditioned to it. I wouldn’t say it’s worth the price of the slide cut/slide and the RMR if you are already use to a regular sight, but it works none the less.

Most people aren't cutting off their red dot so there is no need to turn it on when its needed.

Not having a light source with your sd weapon makes no sense to me. Weather its mounted or hand carried, its an extra tool at your disposal that will it help with identifying the target(s) and aid in your maneuverability in dark places along with numerous other benefits and advantages.

I don't have RMR coin in my couch cushions. I'm fast fire III broke, so I can't leave mine on......

A flashlight on your gun looks badass, but unless you're an operator or doing meth raids, is NG. My house is normally not a TRE. I would automatically be covering most of the things I need to ID. Which may not be the perp. Dog, cat, wife, kids....

Tritium dots are easier to find in the dark when SHTF and they don't give you light blindness. Flashlight in your other hand that can be held far away from your center mass in case perp sees light and decides to discharge.

    But what do I know.

Well guns in the world of defense guns aren’t toys. If you have gear for real shit then it better be good reliable gear. RMR dual is good enough for Afghanistan it’s good enough for going to get gas and milk but yes new will cost about $400 at least. Plus slide cut or new slide $50 to $300. However it’s not needed, most people it just messes them up if they have a poor draw, they usually end up looking for the reticle. A stock pistol is plenty for 98% of people.

As far as the flashlight goes, it’s a two way street. Cops I get use flashlights, however most cops aren’t trying to sneak around. They generally make their presents known, And they are looking for hands and other threats to their immediate safety.

Running and hiding or using cover and concealment as a way of evading a threat, like in a parking lot at night, a flashlight will just give away your position. Generally speaking, you don’t really need one unless you are night blind, under canopy, or in enclosed dark spaces, but there’s always exceptions to everything right?

    Point being, it depends.

I EDC a CZ P07 with a Vortex Viper (and PL-MINI). I found that a dot is more accurate, easier to achieve target/aim/focus, and with proper training, properly fast. My IDPA scores improved significantly upon mounting the optic, and all my non-competition range time has validated those improvements. My only regret is not going RMR, as the viper does not have an always-on mode. It auto-off's at 14hrs which means every time I re-holster the weapon I turn the dot on/power cycle. An RMR battery with the brightness set to match your light will usually last 1 year constant on and that is what I want from my optic. The bulk does not bother me, because the slide height is not the limiting factor on printing/comfort with or without the optic.

    Well said.

Flashlights aren’t just for operators or meth raids. It all depends on what your purpose is. I also think I have a far different idea of what SHTF would constitute. I don’t even rate Las Vegas as a SHTF scenario. It’s also not a scenario I would involve myself with. Unlike like that dumbass that said he was going to help the cops storm the hotel. I’m sure there are lots that say or think they would storm the mall in a active shooter scenario like it’s a shoot out.

As far as the flashlight goes, mine is on my pistol for home use. If I hear someone in my house I want to be able to see them if I “choose” to turn it on. Actually firing is my last option, also not a lot of people rob someone’s house while armed. We can agree to disagree if someone thinks you need to shoot first.

Running around with lights or lasers on while moving to or from cover is dumb. It’s called laser and light discipline. We never cleared houses or conducted raids with lights on unless it’s was post cleared or while shooting. Light and laser comes on while you shoot, goes off after you fire.

It’s all based on how you train, what you’re used to and how you apply it.
